Today @POTUS and @SecMayorkas issued their guidance to reimplement (and expand!!!) the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) - a deadly program that violates the human rights of asylum-seekers every day it exists. A🧵on what this means and how it's really really bad.
Time and time again @DHSgov and @POTUS have affirmed that #MPP is an unworkable program with "endemic flaws, imposed unjustifiable human costs" that "fails to provide the fair process and humanitarian protections that individuals deserve under the law." This is true.
.@DHSgov claims that due to a Texas court decision that #MPP must be re-implemented, their hands are tied. But despite their changes to supposedly make the program less-inhumane, the new guidance actually EXPANDS #MPP
The @DHSgov guidance says it will apply to "nationals of any country in the Western Hemisphere other than Mexico" but prior iterations excluded those from #Haiti and other Caribbean countries at a time when #Haitians are in dire need of protection. iom.int/news/un-agenci…
The Admin will continue to lift up 1. the fact that they are working to re-terminate and 2. the changes to make it more "humane." But 👏there 👏is 👏no 👏humane 👏way 👏to 👏implement 👏MPP. The program violates the human right to seek asylum, period.
Trying to navigate the complicated and adversarial asylum process on an expedited timeline while your life is in danger is just unacceptable and inhumane. There's no way around it, no way to make it better.
Our friends at @humanrights1st have done incredible work tracking the human impact of MPP: at least 1,544 publicly reported cases of murder, rape, torture, kidnapping, and other violent assaults. humanrightsfirst.org/campaign/remai…
@amnestyusa has condemned #MPP time and time again. Our researchers heard first-hand stories of pregnant people, LGBTI people, children, and people with disabilities subjected to abuses and discrimination while they waited in Mexico.
The US has obligations under international and domestic law to uphold the right to seek asylum and it is failing. Let's remember that #MPP will be implemented while #Title42 is still in effect. This means, in practicality, that the United States is closed to people seeking asylum
The #MPP guidance actually includes some detailed COVID-19 mitigation measures including vaccines, health screenings, masking, social distancing, etc. The very same measures that public health experts say should be implemented instead of #Title42. publichealth.columbia.edu/research/progr…
Meaning that @DHSgov can implement #COVID mitigation measures when it's politically convenient. But apparently @POTUS is still choosing xenophobia and racism over protecting human rights
