what if foxxian and dragonji grew up together in the palace but neither had the courage to confess. so, when lwj returns triumphant from the war—the Lans have served the Weis for generations as warriors—the Wei emperor asks him what reward he wants. and lwj asks to marry foxxian.
some backstory: when lwj is not out there fighting great battles for his emperor, he’s wwx’s personal bodyguard, tailing him around the palace... I just love the thought of dragons being the designated warrior clan that serves the emperor (and in turn, pretty fox princes)!
something about the trait of dragons being extremely steadfast and loyal to those they serve AND also being so inhumanly powerful and strong that makes them the ideal warrior type—just gets me! also, the intensity of their devotion makes their love sometimes scary (but so good)
more backstory on this au that keeps me up at night: every fox in the palace is assigned a personal Lan bodyguard, who are also soldiers that are sent to fight in the war when necessary. since wwx is the emperor’s Youngest Most Beloved Prince, he gets Lan Wangji, Second Lan Heir.
anyway, from young, our little xianxian is tailed by the most stoic BUT most devastatingly handsome dragon warrior that also doubles as wwx’s playmate, because everyone else in the palace is too busy to bother with wwx. they do everything together! so they become best friends.
by everything, I mean everything!!! when wwx wakes up in the morning, lwj’s already waiting by his door. they have all three meals together, and after dinner, lwj walks wwx back to his room. sometimes wwx invites him in. sometimes lwj says yes. they talk all night on wwx’s bed.
it was very easy to fall in love with wei ying. if you asked lan wangji when it started, he couldn’t even pinpoint an exact day or time. it just is. wwx is his heart and soul. wwx, with his charming self and his beautiful smile and his nine tails, the epitome of a foxy beauty!
however, as close they may be, lwj is an honourable dragon that dare not make a single move on the (1) person—royal—he’s been tasked to protect. he is not of wei ying’s status. he dare not reach for the sun and run the risk of getting burnt. for if wwx didn’t feel the same way…
but as the years go by and wwx becomes of marriageable age, the offers soon come flooding in.

wwx is coveted, he knows. and even if wwx rebuffs all of them, And The Emperor Lets Him, soon there will come a day when wwx will /have/ to marry for it is his duty as a royal.
such a notion scares lwj. he does not want to lose the only light of his life to any—undeserving—opponent!

so, he does what any honourable dragon does. he heads out, wins a great war, and returns first thing to pay his respects to the emperor.

that’s when he sees his chance.
“it’s time for me to reward you for your great efforts to this kingdom,” the Wei emperor tells him. “you have never asked for a single thing from me, so now I’d like to grant you your heart’s desires. name anything you want, and it is yours.”

“anything,” lwj repeats, to affirm.
“anything,” the Wei emperor nods.

“then,” lwj breathes. “then I wish to ask for wei ying’s hand in marriage.”

it comes as a surprise to the emperor, but he’s not one to go back on his word. he never meant to marry off his beloved son to just anyone, anyway, and by marrying…
…wwx to the direct heir of the dragon clan meant that wwx would remain in this kingdom, and still remain under his care and protection. he trusts the dragon clan. he knows of lan wangji’s devotion to his son. there cannot be a better match.

“then, you have it,” he answers lwj.
lwj thanks the emperor with a final bow of his head, and leaves the throne room with his heart bursting in his chest.

after all these years, wei ying is now finally his. he’ll have those everydays with wwx, forever. every breakfast, lunch, dinner. every walk back to his room.
that night, when they have dinner together, wwx asks why there’s an unusual glimmer in lwj’s eyes today.

“are you so happy you won the war?” wwx teases, reaching a finger over to tap playfully at lwj’s nose. “you never cared about your victories before.”

“I do, for this one.”
wwx laughs. “hmm,” he ponders, with a finger to his own chin. “you’re getting all conceited about your accomplishments now, aren’t you? The Great Dragon That Conquers All! I’ll write that on a banner for you.”

lwj softly answers, “I care about what I’ve won, this time round.”
“and what exactly did you win?” wwx teases, once more. “my father’s praise? another war medal? what could you possibly want, anyway?”

lwj wonders if he has the courage to tell him. “…coming home to you.”

(he doesn’t, after all.)

“you always come back home to me, silly!”
lwj walks wwx back to his room, and greets him goodnight at the door.

“I’ll see you in the morning?” wwx asks, as if it’s not already part of the routine.

“always,” lwj responds.

perhaps he does not win those wars solely for the emperor. he wins them to come home to wwx, too.
but when wwx wakes up the next morning, lwj is absent from his door.

“your father wishes to see you,” his handmaiden alerts him, dressing him up finely for court. “it seems your majesty has news for your highness.”

wwx thinks nothing of it. his father always worries over him.
he heads for the throne room, and kneels on one knee to greet his father.

his father has an announcement to make indeed. he sits high in his chair, and reads off an imperial scroll.

“within three months, you will be wed to Lan Wangji, second son of the Gusu Lan Dragon Clan.”
wwx’s eyes widen. he gets up from where he’d been kneeling on the floor immediately. “w-what? father, lan zhan couldn’t possibly want that. don’t force this decree on him—“

“a-ying, he asked for this himself.”

wwx’s heart jumps. “w…what?”
“I promised to reward him for his victory in the war, and he asked for your hand in marriage.”

wwx stills. never in a million years would he expect… “he…did?”

“yes,” the emperor says. “I’ve already set a date for the wedding. it will be announced to the capital. it is final.”
wwx’s still in shock, but even he knows not to go against his father’s order. he bows, “father’s choice is wise.”

as he shakily gets up and leaves the room however, his father stops him in his tracks.

“a-ying, do you love him?”

wwx’s voice is barely above a whisper. “yes.”
wwx’s making his way down the long corridor of the palace when he sees lwj standing at the end, waiting for him.

for a moment, it’s almost as if lwj can’t bear to raise his gaze to meet his. out of—shame? embarrassment? nervousness?

fear of wwx violently objecting to this?
“wei ying…” lwj says, raising a hand hesitantly to reach for the—unusually subdued—fox. “I trust you’ve heard.”

lwj had sought to keep this secret from him, and so wwx seeks to tease him. just a little.

“oh, you mean your engagement to one of the fox princesses? congrats!”
lwj freezes, all colour draining from his face. “w…what?”

“yes, father talked all about it! he’s even set a date and everything. I always knew you were eyeing one of my sisters!”

lwj’s mind completely shuts down in front of him, and wwx thinks he has had enough fun for now.
“so, when were you going to tell me you asked for my hand in my marriage?” wwx sulks openly—and only then does light return to lwj’s eyes once more.

“w…wei ying!”

“it is not nice to go behind one’s back!”

“I apologise,” lwj sputters out. “I was afraid if I…”
“if you came to me first, then what?” wwx squints at him. “that I’d laugh at your face, and say no? so you thought the safest way was to get my father to agree, first?”

lwj’s been completely seen through. “I did not know how wei ying felt about me…”

“I didn’t, either!”
“wei ying is of a marriageable age,” lwj sighs. “I was getting worried…”

“well, there’s a reason I turned down all those offers!”

lwj stills. “there is…?”

“yes,” wwx can’t help but smile. “you see, there happens to be this dragon.”

“…there is?”

“and he’s really handsome!”
lwj feels his ears grow hot. “is he?”

“mm. and he’s really good at fighting! he wins all the battles he fights in!”

“oh,” lwj says. he bites his tongue, so the tremors won’t show in his voice. “do I… know him?”

“mm, probably not,” wwx grins. “he’s a bit of a recluse.”
lwj’s face glows, with a ray of hope. “perhaps it’s because he’s spending all his time with the one he adores…”

“perhaps!” wwx says. “but I want him, and him only.”

“oh,” lwj says, his gaze warm on wwx. “then it’s a good thing he loves you more than anything in the world.”
when lwj takes a step forward and closes the distance between them, wwx doesn’t make a move of protest. and when those lips tilt downwards to capture wwx’s mouth in the sweetest kiss, wwx can only let out a little gasp of excitement.

lwj pecks his lips, again, again, and again.
one soft kiss leads to another until wwx’s being pushed up against an empty wall, his two arms wrapped up tightly around lwj’s neck.

“lan zhaan,” wwx whines, only because he wants to be difficult. “anyone could just walk by, here. you wouldn’t want to get caught, wouldn’t you?”
“why not,” lwj answers, suddenly with the confidence of a man who now has everything he could ever want—within just his grasp. “I’m your /husband/.”

wwx throws his head back and laughs.

truly, dragons are really one of a kind!

…or maybe it’s just his lan zhan. hehe.
“you could have just asked me to marry you,” wwx hums, staring into his favourite molten gold eyes. ”I’d have said yes.”

“then,” lwj breathes out. “wei ying, will you marry me?”

wwx grins. “yes.”

lan zhan’s a little late, but he’ll take it.

he’s his husband, after all.
