You probably don’t need one, but if you do, here you are. And I think some may find the test process interesting.
How do you know I’m not shilling for one of the commercial vendors?
You don’t.
But I show my work, and you can do similar tests if you want (that’s the point of the writeup).
I’m fortunate in that I have some high quality test gear, but that wasn’t essential to being able to do this. You could get close to this level of accuracy with cheaper, hobbyist-grade gear if you understand what you’re trying to measure and what can confound the measurements.
Normally, tests like this are done in much more elaborate (and expensive) specialized lab setups than what I used. I wrote this up because I love reading other people’s experiences carefully investigating things like this with sub-national-lab resources.
If I had a lot more money, time, and space, I’d build a walk-in RF anechoic chamber (which is the right tool for this sort of testing). But that’s well over 10dB more formidable and expensive* than what I’ve got here.
* using the power ratio dB form, because money is power.
If it weren’t for the, you know, global plague, I’d planned to bring this to Shmoocon and let people measure things. Sigh.
Next year for sure!
Over the last week, I’ve been told I don’t understand decibels, that I should have used a tracking generator (why didn’t I? Think about the test setup!), and that I’m hiding the truth about aluminum foil.
Fortunately, I’m not stopping you from doing your own measurements.

TIL that a lot of people who think they understand decibels don’t realize that there are different scales for amplitude (volts), where a factor of 10 is 20dB, and for power (watts),where a factor of 10 is 10dB ). It’s confusing, but part of what makes dBs useful.
Why? Because it enables sorcery where once you measure ratio and convert to dB (whether with volts or Watts), the same dB values are useful for calculations in either.
In other words, suppose I have a circuit that attenuates volts. I measure 1 volt going in and 0.1 volts coming out. That’s a 20 dB attenuation.
Now I can take this 20 dB attenuator and calculate that if I put 1 Watt in, I’ll get 0.01 Watts out (a 20dB reduction in power).
Everything you’ve always wanted to know about cellphone Faraday pouches but were afraid to ask (because then they’d know you wanted to know about cellphone Faraday pouches). mattblaze.org/blog/faraday/
A few weeks ago, I posted a tediously long thread testing various cellphone-sized Faraday pouches. I’ve expanded that into an even more tediously long blog post. mattblaze.org/blog/faraday/
To clarify:
1. I don’t sell Faraday pouches, or have any connection to anyone who does.
2. I don’t know if you need one. If I had to guess, I’d say probably not.
3. Learning how to measure things like this is fun and instructive if you’re a nerd like me. Maybe you are.
Irritating branding failure: AppleTV (the box you can hook up to your TV) vs AppleTV+ (the subscription streaming service). It’s impossible to search for one without getting a ton of irrelevant results about the other.
Relatedly, a (not annoying) anachronism: devices like the AppleTV, cable tunes, etc, are called “set-top boxes”, but modern flat-panel TVs no longer have space to put things on top of them.
By the way, I recently picked up an AppleTV box, and I have to say I’m quite pleased with it, even though almost all of its functionality could be pried out of apps running on the TV and/or game console. It’s just really well thought out, especially if you already have an iPhone.
Reality Winner paid a steep price for her disclosure of classified material, but it’s also important to recognize the significant interest the public had in its content. I still teach from it in my election integrity course. rollingstone.com/politics/polit…
Justice would have been far better served had her sentence been commuted, but that was obviously something the previous administration was never going to consider. I hope she finds happier times ahead.
The Intercept absolutely deserves the criticism its gotten here, not just for its failure to protect its source, but also for its failure to more carefully redact the document to protect sensitive sources and methods.
Apparently London has elected a new Lord Mayor, which is a completely different office from the Mayor of London. Because England (which isn’t quite the same as the UK or Great Britain) is determined to be hopelessly confusing.
Granted, we have Manhattan, which is the same as New York County and which has its own President, which is a not the same as New York City, which has a Mayor, except that the Governor of New York State (a different thing) sort of runs the NYC subway for some reason.
And East New York is in New York City and New York State but not New York County, and not to be confused with West New York, which is in none of those.
