ARSENAL ATTACKING CORNERS VS MANCHESTER UNITED:
A SHORT ANALYSIS
Match: Manchester United 3-2 Arsenal

in the match up vs United on Thursday, Arsenal proved to be threatening from corner situations.
ive analysed why👇

(apologies for any picture quality issue)
arsenal have been prolific from set pieces, particularly corners in 21/22

in this short thread, I take a look at arsenal's corner routines and thus, the work of newly appointed set piece coach Nicolas Jover in their match vs the Red Devils
LINE UPS:
match ups are important as physical advantages matter + players who switch off can be targeted.

Utd: DDG's tendency to stay on his line + Mctom/CR7's tendency to switch off.

Arsenal: Gabriel, White, Tomiyasu, Partey as options in the box.
ESR, Ode taking corners
Arsenal Set up:
Inswinging corners aimed at the 6 yard box from ESR (left) & Ode (Right).
Partey, Elneny around DDG, creating traffic
White & Auba made various, random(IMP) moves to disorientate+win flick ons.
Gabriel & martinelli from the pen spot.
ESR & Elneny second phase
UTD set up:
Rashford marking Partey,

Fred -> White (IMP)

Telles -> Tomiyasu

Dalot -> Gabriel

Bruno, Ronaldo, Mctominay zonal at the near post.

Maguire zonal in the middle

Lindelof -> covering far post

Sancho for second phase
Random moves of Auba, Gabriel & White:

They'd go for near flick-ons or stay around DDG creating blocks (Auba/White), or go to the back post(Gabriel)

Randomness is crucial: it prevented Utd from adjusting.

Similarly, Ode & ESR's delivery was across 6-yrd box: not 1 spot
3 Early Corners:
here, we can see the setups.
Arsenal had 3 players around DDG which drew Utd players across & created traffic, opening near post flick ons/back post crosses.

Gabriel ran from deep with momentum with Martinelli (left free by Utd to gamble)
Goal from SetUP:
In the set up, I mentioned that Fred marking White+random movements of White were Important.
In the Goal, White doesnt stay or spin to the near post.
He spins towards DDG, drawing Fred across to mark him which results in the collision.
Arsenal's 2 man Second phase set up also a plus as it allows Elneny to deal with Sancho
& ESR picks up the pieces, shooting first time into an open net.
Huge Value as with Gabriel across the front for a flick on, even if a collision doesnt happen, ddg is disorientated by bodies.
Mid-Game tweak:
Perhaps the one con of the first set up of Arsenal was the unclear role of Martinelli, who was trying to Gamble from deep but rarely was close to involvement.

Arsenal changed this Mid-Game, with Martinelli starting in the 6 yard box and spinning across the front
Auba would meanwhile stay in the traffic and Partey would look to peel of the back/block Maguire.

Here: White & Martinelli across the front, while Partey blocks Maguire allowing Gabriel to isolate himself vs Lindelof after beating Dalot (he did all game)
Clear-Cut chance from Tweak:
Gabriel this time attacked the front of Maguire, getting a flick on.
White, again in a new position, was at the spot and peeled away, bringing fred and thus creating confusion b/w him and Dalot, allowing Gabriel to get free

If u notice Martinelli, he spins across Mctominay from behind Maguire.
Through this
1. he attracts Maguire's attention who thus isnt sharp enough to affect Gabriel's flick on
2. his run across Mctominay prevents Scott from pushing up and covering the top of the 6 yard box.
CONCLUSION:
Arsenal created huge chaos from attacking corners in this match and it led to the 1st goal+ 2 of their most dangerous moments (White & Gabriel flick ons)
Nicolas Jover deserves massive credit, as he has maximised Arsenal's aerial talent, which isnt extensive.
IF u look at the significance of his work, Gabriel is arsenal's biggest aerial threat and by
1. making him attack fast 6 yrd box crosses from the spot
2. loading up the 6 yrd box to create traffic and space for Gabriel to charge without impediment

He has allowed Gabriel to get
close in chances with best possible conditions for success (arriving with momentum onto fast whipped balls).

This is different from say Maguire, who starts at the edge of the box with lots of players around him, resulting in chances from ~12yards or more with little momentum.
This approach also helped arsenal's other players as
the likes of White, Auba, Partey only have flick fast 6 yard box crosses towards goal.

Arsenal are also fairly protected in the second phase, only vulnerable to the sides of the 2 second phase men

Top Work from Jover!

A LATE ANALYSIS OF LIVERPOOL MAN CITY:
A potentially key match in the title picture, this was a battle that showcased Pep and Klopp at their very best, making numerous ingame tactical tweaks to turn the tide.
DISCLAIMER: APOLOGIES FOR VIDEO QUALITY, SEEMS TO BE A METTRICA ISSUE,
Both Liverpool and Man City had issues while pressing from a structural perspective, resulting in them losing the control of the game before tweaking mid game.
In this thread we will look at
1. The line ups
2. The initial set ups
3. The issues with those set ups
4. The changes
1. Line ups:
Both teams lined up in their usual 4-3-3’s. Liverpool had Jota up front and Milner took the place of TAA who was unavailable.
City lined up with Foden and Jesus on either wing and Grealish up front, unlike the game in midweek vs PSG where Sterling and Mahrez featured

There is an issue with this sort off thought process.
In that newcastle have more leverage than every one around them already.
They have a bigger stadium and fan base than most of the clubs in and around them while also having serious money to play with now.
As long as they have good decision makers, they'll fly up the league towards europa spots of the back of that.
Then they also have serious monetary advantages for wages and transfer fees over some of the bigger teams which allows them to grow.
This sort off language was probably used for Man city before they won the league etc.
Look at them now.

Newcastle's owners also have the added advantage of political pressure of wanting to do better than Sheikh mansour's man city

THE FLAWS OF PSG’s 4-3-3:
PSG vs City 2-0 Tactical Analysis
In the Recent CL Group stage clash, Pochettino’s PSG came out on top over Pep’s Man city. However, there were some repetitive flaws in Pochettino’s set up which will be something for Pochettino to resolve.

THREAD📜
In this thread, we will look at
1.the line ups of both teams
2.the on and off the ball tactical set ups
3.flaws in Poch’s set up
4.flaws after Second Half change

NOTE: this is a PSG centric thread.
1. THE LINE UPS:
Both lined up in a 4-3-3.
PSG fielded their deadly trio and 3 second phase midfielders.
Meanwhile, City lined up with two 8/10’s in KDB and Bernardo.
Pep went for Sterling up front who has been in and out of City’s side since KDB came back from injury last szn.

HOW SHOULD CITY BEAT CHELSEA?
Pep’s side played Chelsea under Tuchel on 3 occasions last szn and lost.
In light of their clash today, I had a look at the 2 key issues that City had in the CL Final and what might be done to mitigate them.
BUILD UP ISSUES:
City built up in a 3-1 shape in the Cl final, with walker dropping to make a 3 and Gundogan as a single pivot.
Further forward, city had 3 options between the lines with zinchenko pushing up.
Kdb would hold the lines and could easily interchange with Foden.
The issues was that chelsea’s 5-2-3 midblock with a narrow front 3 meant that Che blocked the pivot easily and forced City wide into the trap.
City struggled to find their btl options and build through the centre.
City’s set up also left CHE’s narrow 3 free to counter.

Vdb didn't do much wrong today.
He also didn't do much wrong vs young boys.
And yet somehow, united would be miles better if he was not playing or was playing further forward with an actual pivot player deeper.
Thts the reality.
He roams too much, which leaves u without passing options deeper.
And leaves u exposed in transition.

A player being good doesn't make the player right for you.
And equally, if a player ain't great for someone else doesn't mean he won't be top for you.
Donny van de beek cannot play in the pivot for me.
He just roams forward and to the wings too much to be considered a good pivot player.
Martial was an issue, but vdb being in the pivot was a bigger issue

The Artful Dodger: A case study on Edinson Cavani.

Match Analysed: Tottenham 1-3 Man Utd

I decided to look at the movement of Edinson Cavani using his performance vs Spurs away, one of his best in a Utd shirt and look at why ole wants him to stay.
In this thread we’ll see:
1.The positions he picks up+ how he stays unmarked
2.favoured runs
3.Corners
4.Him vs the rest
5.Involvement in goals
NOTE: due to character limits, I have used some short forms
1. Positions Picked Up & Method of Staying Unmarked:
Cavani is a CF similar to pre-Pep Aguero. He stays upfront, mostly on the blind side of the opp. CB to the ball. Hence, he is always ready to attack a cross if the play continues down that side.
This is Blindside positioning
