Forensic pathology — the study of the cause and manner of death — could have helped solve how dozens of civilians in Douma lost their lives. Instead, senior OPCW officials thwarted it and suppressed an internal recommendation that it be pursued.
Early in the Douma probe, leaked emails show, a senior OPCW official turned down a proposal to consult with a forensic pathologist at the Netherlands Forensic Institute, based nearby in The Hague. "It seemed like an excellent opportunity", a disappointed team member wrote. 
Denied this key input, the Douma team’s original report then called for "an expert in forensic pathology… to provide an authoritative assessment." But this call was censored. The OPCW then ignored forensic pathology for the remainder of the probe.
