QP Time! Buckle up for a thread, friends! Meili rises first and asks about Moe’s hug an anti-vaxxer for Christmas campaign. Then asks about the modelling for Omicron. Merriman says the plan is status quo. So basically we’re just hoping for the best. No mention of modelling.
QP: Meili asks about modelling again. And why the SHA leaders are leaving again. This may be my inexperience talking, but sometimes Meili asks like four questions at a time. Then we settle on asking about a public inquiry again.
QP: Merriman points to us having the lowest per capita cases in Canada. Which, if you look at this specific moment in time, true. But it doesn’t really tell the tale.
QP: Then Merriman complains about the NDP living in the past and focusing on past problems (that happened last month). Less than five minutes after Greg Ottenbreit was attacking the NDP for things that happened when half their MLAs were in high school. Is anybody buying this?
QP: Meili getting fired up. Asking again about modelling. I like this fire from Meili. Now shooting barbs about transparency and asking about an inquiry again.
QP: Merriman again starts listing good looking stats. Which, again, is like saying we solved climate change because it’s cold outside today. Doesn’t address the question about the inquiry at all.
QP: Can we talk for a second about decorum in the house? Sometimes you can’t even hear what someone is saying over the heckling. It’s so frustrating and unproductive. It’s just dumb theatrics.
QP: Merriman talking about returning healthcare staff to their original jobs. This is a good thing, assuming you completely ignore why those people had to be moved into emergency jobs in the first place.
QP: Meili brings forward an RN who was redeployed to the ICU. Talks about burnout in HCWs. Asks again about an inquiry. Merriman thanks her. Of course, doesn’t address the idea of inquiry again. He then thanks the people of Saskatchewan again. His favourite way to stall for time.
QP: Meili again going after the pandemic response. Asked about long-term consequences to the healthcare system. Merriman talks about how many calls he returns to healthcare workers. And how much he talks to healthcare workers. Any healthcare workers want to corroborate this?
QP: Merriman seems to be taking the Moe approach, trying to thread the needle by simultaneously catering to the unvaccinated, while also trying to blame them. It’s wearing thin.
QP: Meili asks about the call with the anti-vaxxer. Merriman sounds heartbroken by the idea of the question. Claims they’re reaching out to talk about the benefits of vaccines. Shouldn’t that be up to…healthcare workers? Like who should be getting medical advice from their MLA?
QP: I know before I get my flu shot, I like to hear from the health minister.
QP: Now Vicki Mowat. Asks again why Scott Livingstone left. I know this is all part of politics, and keeping it on peoples’ minds, but I get frustrated when folks in QP ask questions that they know the other side couldn’t possibly answer. We all know he won’t say.
QP: Mowat asks about minister applying pressure to SHA. Merriman thanks Livingstone. Doesn’t even pretend to answer the question. Says the SHA is now being led by interim CEO. Merriman complains about the heckling. It's a lot. Link at end. Time is around 2:22.
QP: Mowat asks a question about recruiting new leadership at SHA. Merriman is acting like this is totally normal turnover. Then Merriman accuses Meili of not thanking the SHA staff and HCWs. I mean. He’s literally a medical doctor. So…y’know.
QP: Mowat asks again about board pressures about filling the COO position. Both sides (seems like a lot of NDP) are yelling before Merriman even starts talking. I’m not sure this is helping. Again, maybe this is above my pay grade. But it’s not a great look from where I sit.
QP: Nicole Sarauer: Asking what is to be gained by changing leg security. Christine Tell:We live in an ever-changing time. Looking at ways to enhance security in the building AND the grounds. Makes it even more obvious this is about controlling protestors and access. No answer.
QP: Sarauer calls out how nobody supports this. At all. Which is true. Asks if Tell can name anyone outside govt who supports this. Tell inexplicably talks about 2000 FTEs employed by the ministry of corrections, which is, of course, completely unrelated.
QP: Tell accuses NDP of calling these corrections officers partisan appointments. There’s no way she actually believes this. It’s a completely unrelated claim. And ridiculous.
QP: Sarauer calls the bill a dumpster fire. Govt starts shouting her down. Tell calls the NDP ridiculous and insane. Then she says she invites vigorous debate. Which is absolute nonsense. The govt literally blocked debate on this last night. Matt Love filibustered the attempt.
QP: Tell again accuses the NDP of not listening to her. Then points to BC and AB’s security setups. Both of which are completely different, but she's acting like they aren't. Then Tell says “times have changed”. What does that mean? She doesn't say.
QP: Harrison rises again to call for an apology, as is his tradition. Starts citing procedure and hansard pages and demanding apologies, because of course he does. It feels a lot like the person who constantly goes back to the rulebook when playing a board game.

So I wanted to talk a bit about the climate today, and how our government seems to have no interest at all in dealing with it. So I tried to read through the official climate plan, and…hoo boy. It’s a real piece of work. A thread.
When you follow the link, you’re shown the single stupidest chart you’ll see in your entire life. Comparing a small province to the entire global population is intentionally misleading. You’re then treated to a video of Brad Wall talking about the plan.

I know it's an older news release, but not much as changed and Moe has barely talked about the plan. I mean, he promised a new “made in Saskatchewan plan” as soon as possible. In March. So, don't hold your breath.

Since I've started talking more about politics, I've gotten a range of reactions. Some folks think I'm ridiculous for caring about electoral politics, and, fair enough. I used to agree. Then I got more involved in labour and saw how politics puts its stain on everything.
Wanna bargain? The law governs what you can bargain about. Wanna strike? The law governs when, where, and how you can strike. Want a higher salary? The government decides how much food is on the table, then unions argue over scraps.
And there are some folks who will argue that labour laws are made to be broken, and that's fine. But lots of the folks who are in those labour groups have families and responsibilities, and different risk tolerances. Not everyone feels they can take the same stands.

I see tweets like this, and I get so frustrated. Because the person tweeting this knows exactly what they're doing. They're intentionally misunderstand to move the conversation from gun rights and safety, to talking about the tweet. It's cheap politics, and it works. Short thread Image
These folks never play defence. They just say more and more extreme things. That way, instead of talking about gun safety, we talk about this weird pseudo-conflict that she basically made up. The idea of banning a band because they hold difference values from you? We all know...
it's ridiculous, so we engage. We ratio the hell out of it. But is that productive? I honestly don't know. I'm putting it to you folks. When somebody says something so confidently and incorrectly, it's hard to leave it alone. But if you call her on it....

The row with the Ag Producers get me thinking a bit about the way the Sask Party consults, or doesn't. And about how governments get out of touch. Let's talk about it. A thread...
I started teaching in 2007. The year Brad Wall came into power. And oh boy did he make promises. Check out the attached summary of the 2007 election promises. Balanced budget requirement (abandoned), tying civil service increases to population...

growth (we aren't even close), fixed election dates (surprise pandemic election, anyone?), and a ban on pre-election government advertising (I actually laughed out loud when I read that one). So how does a government completely walk away from everything it said it'd do?

This article has me furious. 96000 people in this province make under 15$/hour. Our government has no intention of doing anything about this. How can we as a province look at ourselves in the mirror knowing that someone can work full time and still... globalnews.ca/news/8425725/s…
Be making 9000$/year below the poverty line? This is insulting. This is condemning people to poverty. How can we claim hard work is the path out of poverty when we have clear evidence that you can work full time and still be poor?
But our government doesn't care. They hide behind rules that they wrote and claim to be powerless to help. They indexed the minimum wage. So it doesn't get reviewed regularly like it does in other provinces. They just hide behind the rule and claim to be powerless to help.

Some of the responses to my recent threads have me thinking about a big obstacle the NDP face. Mistrust. For reasons that I've never been quite clear on, people seem to be downright afraid of the NDP. They accuse them of incompetence. Why? What do we do? A 🧵
The point of this thread isn't about my opinion of the NDP. That's been discussed a bit, and I'm sure I'll discuss it in later threads. This thread is about the relentless PR campaign against the NDP and how we got here.
Every time you mention the NDP, one of the first things you hear is something minimising their qualifications. Again, my point is their work, my point is, they're no worse than the Sask Party. Half of them are Realtors, farmers, lawyers, or football players.
