We want to share an update on the 7000-series railcars. In November we conducted testing of two 7000-series trains under simulated passenger service conditions to establish the correct, data-driven inspection interval for these railcars.
While the test period has ended, Metro’s Safety Department and Railcar Maintenance engineers are busy reviewing the data and incorporating observations from the test period into a final inspection plan.
The proposed plan will include more frequent wheelset inspections which must be reviewed and accepted by the WMSC before the 7ks can return to service. We hope to know more about the timing of their return soon, but all steps in the process must be satisfied to move forward.
We want to emphasize the 7ks reintegration will be gradual. It will not happen all at once. We are planning for incremental service improvements as the 7ks are phased in, with train arrivals increasing to every 8 minutes on the Red Line and 15 minutes on all other lines.
We want to thank our customers for your patience during this time. We’re committed to your safety and will continue to release updates as they become available. #wmata

A reminder that Metrorail is operating reduced service today, Monday, October 18. Trains on all lines to operate about every 30 minutes. #wmata
WMATA started working with NTSB and the Washington Metrorail Safety Commission last week to determine the cause of the Blue Line derailment at Arlington Cemetery; that investigation is still ongoing.
Because safety remains our number one priority, we have removed all 7000-series railcars from service to properly inspect the fleet.
