Alberta parents—you are going to have to take up the fight against the new curriculum even more than you have been. UCP’s latest smear against ATA was calculated to vilify teachers and turn the rest of the province against them, ahead of their curriculum being forced through. 1/9
If UCP succeeds in splitting the ATA and taking the disciplinary function away, they will use the government’s ability to discipline teachers to strong arm teachers into keeping quiet about how truly awful the curriculum is when they force it on your kids in the fall. 2/9
Breaking up the ATA was a goal in UCP’s founding policy paper. They have always intended to do this. The behaviour of the accused teacher is appalling, and no one disputes that. But the effort to make it seem like the ATA is involved in some nefarious cover up is calculated. 3/9
This is also very carefully timed. Teachers are exhausted (largely due to UCP’s mishandling of the pandemic) and about to go on Christmas break. Instead of being able to recharge a bit, UCP makes sure teachers are even more demoralized. 4/9
Teachers are also in the process of negotiating a contract. Tampering with the association that bargains on behalf of teachers at this time is certainly a conflict of interest. 5/9
Plus, UCP is possibly a bit surprised by the backlash they have had with Bill 81 and its destruction of democracy in our province. They limited debate, invoked closure, and rammed it through in the middle of the night, but people still found out what they were really up to. 6/9
Again, there is no excuse for what that teacher did up to and before 2006. But for Kenney to now insist “The ATA cannot be trusted”? On the basis of a 15-yr-old case, where the teacher was removed from the profession and never taught again? And new allegations just this year? 7/9
The charges laid in February this year were serious. They were not part of the 2006 complaint and discipline hearing. The former teacher reportedly committed suicide a few days after charges were laid. That has nothing to do with the ATA. 8/9
Kenney, Lagrange, and the rest of UCP all know this to be true. And if they are outraged now, why were they not outraged in February? As they try to vilify teachers and turn public opinion against them, remember—UCP will do this to anyone who stands in their way. 9/9

So, the UCP MLAs who voted the way Kenney told them to vote last night are heading home to constituencies for the winter break. I hope their constituents will have a little chat with them and let them know what they think about their spineless corruption. #ableg 1/5
Kenney owns them now. They are over a barrel. Within the next year or so, their constituencies will choose who to nominate for 2023. If these slimy molluscs had spoken out last night, they would soon find their own nomination contest flooded with shiny new ‘memberships’ 2/5
courtesy of Kenney’s deep-pocketed, grifting supporters. If they don’t fall in line, Kenney knows people who will. Be quiet, or get booted off the gravy train. 3/5

Madu is saying that just because he doesn’t like everything the government does (like health restrictions), that he would not bring down the government he helped to elect—this directed at the UCP members who oppose Bill 81 as is. #ableg
Does he think if UCP members vote against the bill, it will ‘bring down the government’? That seems extreme.
Madu says they have a moral responsibility to pass this bill because it will go against the Alberta Federation of Labour. It’s pretty obvious he has been directed to leave the mass membership buying thing alone, and he is obeying. #ableg

David Hanson from Bonnyville says he had an amendment to propose, and they will not even get to it because of the filibustering and he will vote against Bill 81! Hanson wanted to be sure that those who had memberships purchased for them consented to this. #ableg
Todd Loewen backs him up on this and also points out that NDP brought in closure only 3 times (to limit debate) all the time they were in government. UCP has already done this at least 25 times. #ableg
Leela Aheer says the people in her household could buy 1600 memberships, for example. Any special interest group could come in and change the way a nomination is handled. Every single member “needs to know they are a member”. Especially if the vote is electronic with PINs. #ableg

Things to remember about UCP as we head towards what (I hope) will be their last full year in power:

1. They lie about everything, all the time. Big and small, Crucial and inconsequential, blatant or sneaky, overt or by omission. Lies, lies, lies. 1/8
2. None of them are here for you or me. They want us to vote for them and donate money to them, but they don’t care about us. At all. Any performance of care or concern is to avoid losing votes or money. They only care about their rich donors and themselves. 2/8
3. There are no ‘good ones’. There are some who are less egregiously horrible, maybe, but every one of them kept silent and did nothing as the 4th wave took off. Every one of them reads the papers Kenney hands them in the legislature and retweets their lies & bragging. 3/8

Some people take one for the team and watch #ableg on TV, and some don’t have time or are afraid of damaging their own property while watching. So, this can save you some time in the future:

UCP: *Lies*
NDP: They’re lying!
Speaker: Bawls out NDP for accusing UCP of lying.
1/6
NDP: Asks UCP for details on latest screw-up
UCP MLA (reading off a paper Kenney gave them): announces something they already announced.
NDP: Answer the question!
UCP: How dare you!! 2/6
NDP: Rephrases question and asks again
UCP MLA (reading off a paper Kenney gave them): congratulates UCP for something someone else did.
Rachel Notley: 🔥 🔥 🔥 🎯 🎯
UCP: Point of order!
Speaker: Bawls out NDP 3/6

Graham Thomson points out how NDP’s 2019 election result was about 24% of eligible Albertans, and so was the ‘yes’ vote on the equalization referendum. Yet Kenney says this 24% is now a clear mandate. Kenney is suprised anyone would question the validity of this!
The follow-up question is that Kenney would need to get other provinces on board with what Alberta wants (>50% in 7 provinces) and what Alberta wants is not the same as what the referendum question asked.
Kenney says that we will start with this demand and then if we don’t get exactly what we want, we will demand a bunch of other stuff that we will also not get.
