Yesterday was the Nobel winning author Solzhenitsyn's birth anniversary.

I love these lines from one of his lectures.Kavi Samrat Viswanatha Satyanarayana pretty much said the same thing through his Telugu literary works. But ofcourse we brand him Brahminical and sideline him.

+
Solzhenitsyn was a dissident against soviet tyranny so he was useful for cold war west. But he was also anti-west in the sense of criticising a godless materialistic civilisation. That part of him doesn't get as much attention.

+
Excerpts from his lecture:

"On the way from the Renaissance to our days we have enriched our experience, but we have lost the concept of a Supreme Complete Entity which used to restrain our passions and our irresponsibility.."

+
"We have placed too much hope in political and social reforms, only to find out that we were being deprived of our most precious possession: our spiritual life..."

+
" In the East, it is destroyed by the dealings and machinations of the ruling party. In the West, commercial interests suffocate it..."

+
"This is the real crisis. The split in the world is less terrible -- The split in the world is less terrible than the similarity of the disease plaguing its main sections"

+
That a disease plagues us all is lost on many of us. The cure for the disease need not be exactly the same for everyone everywhere. It can stem from their own cultural milieu.

+
As Wendell Berry so poignantly put:

The only true and effective "operator's manual for spaceship earth" is not a book that any human will ever write; it is hundreds of thousands of local cultures.

+
I see Sanatana Dharma based way of life as a realisation of Wendell Berry's yearning above.

This part of our past doesn't get the attention it deserves. Very under studied. Limited to some academic journals, publications and few activist groups.

+
This is an important part of our cultural memory. Jatis played a key role.

Oppressor-oppressed, Brahminical hegemony, Hierarchical tyranny narratives don't do justice to this reality.

Sample this from
"Perspectives on Work, Home, and Identity From Artisans in Telangana: Conversations Around Craft" by Chandan Bose (Available on Google Books)

I find Karpatriji far more helpful on this.

-Ramayana Mimansa

This had to happen. Done with first half.
Watching a movie in cinema hall after ~2 years.
Watching a movie solo after lot many more years.
Amidst all the Jai Balayya chants ofcourse.
It is a decent movie in the usual telugu commercial formula template.

+
Balayya is great as Akhanda.
Ofcourse I can be considered some sort of a Balayya fan in that I have seen many more of his movies in theatres over the years including films like Laayan / Lion and didn't have too many misgivings about it.

+
Way way too many Hindu motifs in the film though. Bollywood would sure have a culture shock if this movie gets dubbed or remade.

Another gem from Ngugi's experience with Colonialism in Africa. This is on how syllabus changed in his school once the colonial masters took over the task of educating the masses.

+
"There was a subtle shift in emphasis in the teaching of certain subjects like history and English. In the old school, teachers told us about African kings like Shaka, Cetshwayo..."

+
"They told us a bit about the white conquest and settlements in South Africa and Kenya. But now the emphasis was on white explorers like Livingstone, Stanley, Rebman, and Krapf.."

Rama's apotheosis is famous interpretation that many have. Particularly those who claim to rely on historical methods.

Apotheosis - (dictionary meaning) - Elevation of someone to divine status.

+
Not entirely sure of Elst's intentions here but typically it translates this way as I have seen elsewhere.

Rama was a king, a mere mortal. He was later made into a God. So was Krishna. Infact Krishna Bhakti seems to have influenced deification of Rama.

+
Rama was made a God by making him an Avatar of Vishnu. So it was with Krishna. You see how all these Avatars are constructed? All this is just fiction. These are just stories that are made up to perpetrate falsities and hegemony of a certain class.
