1) In my career, I have witnessed the impact of coercive control/safeguarding concerns when people are terminally ill. What does that look like? The 'controller' prevents access to medical appointments & to pain relief, in an attempt to hasten illness & death. #CBlive
2)Tremendous pressure is placed on the person to change their will or use their assets to benefit others. People are threatened they will be left in a care setting. People are made to feel intensely guilty about their care needs & the 'burden' they create. #CBlive
3) Use of coercive control is common in Ireland. 1 in 4 women who have been in a relationship report experiences of domestic violence - coercive control is not a even a crime outside intimate relationships. #CBlive
4) We have not enshrined the right to healthcare, to pain management or palliative care in law & access remains a postcode lottery. We do not have ANY adult safeguarding legislation, my local hospice doesn't even have a social worker to identify safeguarding concerns. #CBIive
5) Personally & professionally, I know suffering in death & grief. My worry is that other people I am equally concerned about won't be able to voice their experiences on an RTE panel as they are so often silenced in their Iives. #CBlive
6) Laws around assisted dying which are introduced without also legally enshrining rights of access to healthcare, palliative care, pain management, ADM & adult safeguarding will serve the choices of some, while leaving many others groomed into 'choosing' early death #cblive
7) Coercive control is a highly successful, often hidden behaviour, designed to force someone to comply with goals of the controller. This behaviour does not end in end of life care. I want to hear the measures which will protect people from this. #cblive
8) Listened to the many painful, sensitive views but very conscious some will not be able to share their experiences & thinking of many, many people, who could be so easily exploited & groomed into assisted dying. They matter too. #CBlive
