Today we are launching the AFT #ReadingOpensTheWorld literacy campaign! We are at Malcolm X Elementary school in Washington, D.C. and we are joined by Pres @rweingarten, @fedingram, @AFTEVPDeJesus, @AFLCIO Pres @lizshuler, @WTUTeacher Pres Jackie Pogue Lyons, and @FirstBook. 
I’d like to thank my AFT family for honoring the WTU by kicking off their literacy campaign right here in the District of Columbia, here at Malcom X.

.@rweingarten: This is a model of a bus that is going to go all across America doing the thing we are doing in Washington, DC today.
@rweingarten: We know it does take a village and you have helped restore the village. Thank you very very much.
.@rweingarten: This doesn’t just appear. There’s a lot of people who are involved because this is really important.
.@rweingarten: Why is this important? Because reading really does open the world.
.@rweingarten: We have to make sure that in the aftermath of this pandemic all kids have books at home.
.@rweingarten: That feeling of getting lost in a book, of learning from a book, of relating to the characters and knowing that book will stay with you forever. That’s the magic of books.
.@rweingarten: This campaign is all about coming together to figure out how we support kids in all their reading endeavors.
.@rweingarten: Because now more than ever, after two years of disruption as the result of covid, harnessing the love of reading is key to helping our students and families recover.
