BREAKING: Covid passports pass by 369 votes to 126. That's a *big* Tory rebellion.
For context, this would be around one third of Tory MPs - a much bigger rebellion than anybody had anticipated.
The rebellion came just ONE HOUR after the PM appealed to his backbenchers to support him. Feels like a serious blow to his authority.
Senior Tory rebel Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown says the PM is "in some danger" and that a leadership challenge is on the cards. "He’s got to realise that and he’s got to change”. mirror.co.uk/news/politics/…

EXCLUSIVE: Boris Johnson accused of personally breaking Covid laws by hosting a Christmas quiz in No10 last year - and we've got pictures 👀
mirror.co.uk/news/politics/…
PM caught on screen, sitting beneath portrait of Margaret Thatcher, as he hosted round of quiz on December 15 last year.

He was flanked by two members of top team, one wearing Santa hat, other draped in tinsel. At time, law banned mixing w/ other households for social reasons.
The quiz was supposed to be virtual - but many staff (one source says around 70) stayed in No 10 after work instead.

They huddled by computers, conferring on questions and knocking back fizz, wine and beer. Private office, policy unit & press office all had in-person teams.

EXCL: Boris Johnson is to appoint leading Brexiteer Gisela Stuart as the new civil service commissioner. Likely to be a controversial move.
The role is responsible for making sure that top mandarins are appointed on merit - rather than because of political links - and to guarantee impartiality of civil service.
Ex-Labour MP Gisela Stuart grew close to Boris Johnson as chair of Vote Leave. She urged voters to back the Tories at the 2019 election and was appointed to the Lords by the PM where she sits as a non-affiliated peer.

Boris Johnson kicks off #PMQs by saying he “understands and shares the anger” at No 10 staff over the Christmas party.

“I was also furious,” he says, while suggesting he was told that not party had happened.
PM says he’s “sickened myself and furious” about the leaked vid but was “repeatedly assured” it hadn’t happened.

He announces an internal investigation by Cabinet Secretary Simon Case and says if rules broken “disciplinary action will follow”.
Whether or not PM was aware of the Xmas party (hard to believe he wasn’t) he will struggle to claim he wasn’t aware of the leaving bash on November 17 because he was THERE. He gave a speech.

EXCLUSIVE: Former Education Secretary Gavin Williamson broke Covid rules by holding a festive party at work in the run up to last Christmas. mirror.co.uk/news/politics/…
On December 10 last year up to two dozen of Gavin Williamson’s staff gathered for "drinks and canapes" in the Department for Education cafe.

One source told me: "They were mingling and drinking wine. It was just so reckless”.
Official DfE figures published that same day show that state school attendance was just 85%, meaning that 1.2 million children in England were out of school while the Education Secretary and his top team partied.

NEW: Health Secretary Sajid Javid confirms there is "now community transmission across multiple regions" of England with many omicron cases not linked to travel.

There are now 261 cases in England, 71 in Scotland and 4 in Wales, he tells MPs.
Sajid Javid: "We can't say for certain at this point whether omicron has the potential to knock us off our road to recovery. We are leaving nothing to chance. Our strategy is to buy ourselves time."
New shadow health sec Wes Streeting says that "public compliance depends on public confidence" in the rules - as he asks ministers to "come clean" on No 10 party.

Javid replies: "Of course they should apply to everyone, regardless of who they are".

EXCLUSIVE: Boris Johnson and his Downing Street staff have been accused of breaking Covid rules by attending parties at Number 10 in the run-up to last Christmas.

mirror.co.uk/news/politics/…
The PM gave a speech at a packed leaving do for a top aide last November when the country was in the grip of its second lockdown.
Then just days before Christmas, with London in tier 3 restrictions, members of PM’s top team held their own festive bash in Downing Street.
