NHS hospitals could soon be overwhelmed as the new variant leaves thousands of staff off sick with Covid, according to reports.

@LaurieChurchman outlines the story

It is understood cabinet ministers were given the dire warning at a virtual government meeting this morning.

So many NHS staff are forecast to be off sick by January 15 that there could be too few medics to treat patients, The Sun reports.
The Prime Minister and Government medics told the cabinet that even ‘the most conservative’ estimates of case numbers are looking ‘very bad,’ the paper says 📈

Hospitals in England have already been told to discharge as many patients as possible to free up beds amid the crisis.
⚠️The NHS has been put on its highest state of alert and new emergency plans will allow the health service to scale back normal services ⚠️

Workers are being flown in from Spain and Greece to provide temporary relief over Christmas in hotels converted into care sites💊
The NHS also needs to free up staff so they can fulfil the government’s pledge to give every adult a booster jab in the next two weeks 💉

Experts have warned this will put the health service under huge strain.
As cases of Omicron soar, the government is under pressure to bring in stricter curbs.

Scotland’s first minister Nicola Sturgeon today outlined new guidelines on social contact, including asking for no more than three households to meet in social settings.
But Health Secretary Sajid Javid insisted he was ‘not aware of any plans for further restrictions’.

🔴 Mr Javid has announced that all 11 countries on the coronavirus travel red list will be removed from 4am on Wednesday
The health secretary said the spread of Omicron in the UK and the world means the list is ‘now less effective in slowing the incursion of Omicron from abroad’.

He has told MPs Omicron now represents 20% of cases in England...
... & more than 44% of cases in London, where it is soon expected to become the dominant strain 🦠️

Boris Johnson said people needed to recognise ‘the sheer pace at which [Omicron] accelerates through the population’.
🚨The PM also warned that people should put aside the idea that Omicron is a milder variant 🚨

Wonder how Omicron is different to Alpha, Delta and all the other Covid-19 variants?

@g_krasteva outlines the five key symptoms of the highly-transmissible Omicron variant 🦠️

👇🧵
trib.al/gb2Isab
According to experts in South Africa – where Omicron was first detected – people should look out for five telltale signs.

⚠️These slightly differ from the well-known trio of ‘fever, cough and loss of smell’ listed on the NHS website ⚠️
Dr Angelique Coetzee, chair of the South African Medical Association, was one of the first people to detect the Omicron strain.

She told health officials she was seeing a ‘clinical picture that doesn’t fit Delta’ back in November.

Taking just a few minutes out of your day to do something selfless can offer a glimmer of hope to a struggling person. ✨

You may not think twice about a smile or a cuppa, but it can mean so much more to the recipient. 🎁
And the benefits aren’t just external! 💪

A 2010 Harvard Business School survey found that people who are altruistic are happiest, and further research shows that tangibly kind folks age slower, live longer, and have more energy than others. 🤸‍♂️

Amy has struggled to feel safe ever since she was targeted and mugged on a busy London high street.

Amy, left frustrated with an unhelpful police, now feels unsafe walking alone as a woman.

This is her story 👇

[THREAD] Image
Amy had finished her workday and decided to run to the local pharmacy to pick up a prescription.

She pulled out her phone to check her to-do list but felt a ‘looming presence’ coming up from behind her. Image
‘My phone was being snatched from my hands, black gloves that weren’t mine clinging tightly to it.’

She tried to hold on but her muggers had an advantage.

‘They were on a moped and physically much stronger than me, but my instincts told me to hold on to the phone.’

I'm A Celebrity has used live animals in trials since its inception in 2002. They’ve always been pretty gross - but now their inclusion has become a point of contention.

What would a series without them look like?

Besides welfare worries, many are tired of tuning in and seeing the same animal-led trials all the time, with dwindling ratings suggesting it is high time for a shake-up. Image
What’s it like for contestants when things go wrong?

Olympic javelin thrower Fatima Whitbread was a campmate on the 11th series of I’m A Celebrity in 2011.

That year, a cockroach got stuck up inside Fatima’s nose during the Fill Your Face trial.

'I am among the one in five people in the UK who smoke, contributing packet by packet to the £18billion we spend yearly on tobacco products'

@JessicaCVL asks: what will actually make smokers quit for good? 🚬

🧵👇
trib.al/TgtHcY5
My parents have kept the habit their whole lives, as did both sets of grandparents before them.

Having started in my early 20s and maintained a box-a-day addiction ever since, in many ways I’m a walking target for tobacco companies.
In theory, that should also make me a target for health interventions, too.

But I see the gory pictures on the box and ignore them, I pay the extra duty each time it’s upped, and I continue to light up despite knowing the implications.
