Manufacturing consent and how the media keeps painting a dark image of an African nation.
a thread on the latest hit job article by @declanwalsh published on @nytimesworld
Over the 1 year since the fall out of PM @AbiyAhmedAli of #Ethiopia with the western countries, we have come accustomed to the continuous and ever-increasing smear campaigns perpetrated by the mainstream media including @CNN, @Reuters@BBC@AlJazeera to name a few.
2/
The latest hit piece comes from @nytimes and its Chief African correspondent @declanwalsh who admires African child soldiers who call them “Motivated young recruits”. No surprise if @declanwalsh sees young children and fetishizes them as “Beautiful young brides”.
3/
Let’s take a look at the obvious signs of this clearly an accusation and BS content that is a disservice to journalism.
(1) In a world where an image accompanies almost every article, it picked a darkened and horror-themed, visibly altered picture of the PM as a cover page like a villain vibe to readers.
dark skin + dark continent + dramatic narrative make a good combo to paint a dark picture.
5/
(2) Words of a disgraced diplomat counts as ‘new evidence’? Really, do the claims made by a TPLF member who abandoned his responsibilities m worked against the state, seeking asylum can't be considered reliable. let alone presented as evidence? Try harder @declanwalsh
6/
(3) Claims of 60k recruits from the Amhara region had been reportedly trained in Eritrea, do you have any proof? It’s not like you can smuggle 60,000 people in and out of a country without anyone noticing it. where is your proof @declanwalsh?
7/
(4) Deliberately Mixing up Tigrayans with TPLF, Declan repeatedly uses the term Tigrayans when referring to the enemies of the state, while everyone knows the enemy is TPLF, a Marxist leaning rebel group, that become a ruling party turned to become a terrorist group.
8/
TPLF is a registered terrorist organization according to the US terrorist database? TPLF has dominated the Ethiopian state for 27 years and is responsible for human rights violations, mass murders, and ethnic cleansing.
9/
TPLF publicly boasted of starting the war calling it a ‘pre-emptive strike’ on northern command of the Ethiopian army. Are you suggesting TPLF and 6 million Tigrayans are the same?
Here is a link to refresh your memory.
10/
Do you think it's correct to hold 6 million people accountable for the atrocities, abuses, murderers committed by TPLF?
Labeling people based on ethnicity is hate speech. You should apologize for labeling Tigrayans a TPLF.
TPLF is the enemy, Tigrayans are victims of TPLF.
11/
(5) @declanwalsh claims "Millions of Ethiopians ...yearned for greater regional autonomy", how did you come to this conclusion? have you conducted a vote, at least some public poll, or did you read the minds of 110 mill people?
12/
Perhaps it's the white man's burden to think on their behalf and present it as what they want, cause they can’t think for themselves or speak their minds.
13/
(6) The article conveniently whitewashes crimes and abuses by the TPLF committed over the last 27 years, Contains the now Newyork times signature obsessive need to suggest a noble prize is given for leaders who choose to sit idle when a rebel groups overthrow the government.
14/
It ignores the extensive war preparations by TPLF including large-scale recruitment of soldiers, public displays of Armament, sabotages against reform agendas, instigating ethnic clashes ...etc. leading to the November 4 attack on a military base triggering the war.
