Just sitting here thinking about what would happen if Republicans had the House, the presidency, & 50 senators, & one senator -- literally one guy -- was standing in the way of their entire agenda. I invite you to imagine the full-spectrum, 360° hurricane of shit ...
... that would descend on said senator. The RW billionaires that would call & bully him, buy ads against him, & hire private investigators to dig into his private life. The biz CEOs & lobbying firms that would pledge never to do business with him. The media ...
... that would coordinate -- across radio, cable news, local news, & social media -- to ravage him. The RW candidates that would immediately arise to challenge him in his next primary. And above all, the grassroots fury (also coordinated by billionaires) that would haunt him ...
... everywhere he goes. Shouting mobs outside his house, outside his office, outside everywhere he goes. The death threats that would flood his office.

All these efforts would be coordinated, sustained, & synergistic. The senator in question wold basically have to be willing...
... to commit professional suicide (& risk real physical harm to himself & his family) to stand against his party.

Over on the D side, Manchin risks ... nothing. Faces ... no consequences. Has his ass kissed every day by party leaders. Rather than fury & contempt ...
... Dems (even Dem pundits & amateur Twitter pundits) immediately rolled over & showed him their bellies. They fear him. They discuss him like some mysterious monster in the mountains: all you can do is make sacrifices to him & hope it sates his appetite.
It's not just that the left, broadly speaking, lacks the mechanisms to punish heretics the way the right does. It's that Dems seem to lack the instinct. Instead they go straight to making savvy arguments to one another about how it couldn't be otherwise, oh well, what can you do.
That's what brings status in left journalist/pundit world: the most savvy, world-weary explanation for why Dems can't have what they want, why they can't win, why they need to scale back their aspirations & suppress their values & learn to love the shit sandwich they're eating.
[meditating to stay calm] No, I did not forget about McCain's vote on ACA repeal. I could list about 5,000 disanalogies to the Manchin situation, but they seem like they ought to be obvious so maybe I'll just take a twitter break.

We've reached that familiar stage of things where the left intellectual class descends to explain why failure was inevitable & why it never could have been otherwise. Why Manchin's actually the sensible one & progressives were always wrong. Why trying was always silly.
If you want to be part of the savvy class, the prime imperative is that you never evince any shock or surprise, & you certainly never reveal that you're hurt or upset. Nothing less savvy than that. You saw this coming; it had to be this way; only partisans didn't know this.
For my part, I'm shocked Manchin took his idiocy & bad faith this far. I'm hurt, because millions of people poured their heart into making change & are now being fucked over by our dysfunctional gov't. I'm upset, because the failure of BBB means untold avoidable suffering ...

Biden releases a list of 2,700 (!) regulatory actions planned by his executive branch. These measures will improve lives & prevent disasters, but they unfold in the background & most people never hear about them. reginfo.gov/public/do/eAge…
By & large, Americans are unaware of how big & sprawling the federal regulatory machine is & the extent to which it undergirds the safety & prosperity they take for granted. Everyone should read The Fifth Risk. amzn.to/3pSFO5h
This, to me, is one of the most striking things about the modern Trumpist right wing. They think the media culture war IS politics; they seem genuinely unaware that, outside, in the world, there is a vast apparatus of agencies & rules that keep things running smoothly/safely.

Today's thread on the impending demise of US democracy.

Start with this absolutely essential piece from @bartongellman. As he convincingly argues, Trump successfully stealing the 2024 election is not just possible, it's currently the likely outcome. theatlantic.com/magazine/archi…
Here's @DavidOAtkins arguing that Dems need to be thinking about "break the glass" emergency measures (though he doesn't say what those are?): washingtonmonthly.com/2021/12/04/sav…
Here's election expert @LauraLThornton arguing that, if Wisconsin were a separate country, we would no longer view it as a democracy. washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/…

This is really good -- both in identifying how toxic & absurd Hawley's offering is & in identifying the lack of any clear non-toxic alternative models for men.
Here's a question for you all: who is modeling the kind of masculinity you would like to see more of? Who strikes you as a "real man" but in a *good* way?
The good men list so far (at least two votes):
Keanu Reeves
Dave Grohl
B. Obama
Steve Kerr
Nick Offerman
Jose Andres
Guy Fieri
Stephen Colbert
Tom Hanks
Levar Burton
George Clooney

A reminder that every reactionary movement, in working itself up to violence, starts by convincing itself that its opponents -- the immigrants, intellectuals, & elites -- are a giant monolithic force that is right on the verge of destroying civilization. It's well-worn script.
I was just listening to a podcast about McCarthyism the other day & his rhetoric was practically identical to what you hear today. The commies are everywhere, right on the verge of taking over! They're all in league w/ one another! We have no time to worry about civil liberties!
You see it in the evolution of Proud Boys rhetoric too. First it was about "being ready" for when the left launched its inevitable purge. Then people get guns, get fired up, get tired of waiting, & the rhetoric shifts to "we can't afford to wait, we must preemptively strike!"
