I grew up at a time when the England cricket team was a national punchline, a continual laughing stock. It went on for well over a decade.
But no way, NO WAY would those sides of the 90s have just surrendered like this. And they were up against all-time great opponents. #Ashes
Gooch: an incredible batsman
Atherton: stoic, indomitable at his best
Stewart: got so much more out of the side when taking over as captain
Hussain: tough doesn't even begin to describe him
Thorpe: by far our best player of that era
Ramprakash: underachieved, but hard to get out
And among the bowlers, Gough was continually inspirational, as Malcolm, Headley and Cork all were on their day. Fraser was a metronomic work horse; Tufnell was tremendous at times, and treated quite ridiculously by our joke selectors.
This joke of a team doesn't even compare.
We've got Root, Stokes and no-one else. And the only reason we're still so reliant on a miles past it Anderson and Broad is because nothing's coming through. Nothing at all!
It was already apparent we were a one-man team in 2019. We're still a one-man team in 2021. Pathetic.
Australia are a decent side. No more than that. We're making them look like world beaters.
Only the extraordinary Smith would even get into their batting lineup from back then; none of their bowlers would get anywhere near it.
England. What even are you? Send them all home!

Two individuals, in other words, who've shoved both their country and the whole world down a trapdoor marked 'HELL', all just to make money for themselves.
There's no better symbol of what's happened to liberal democracy everywhere and to their country than that.
But if it was only for positive reasons, then we stay with the US, and award it to Eugene Goodman.
Who helped save his country - and again, potentially the whole world - with his extraordinary courage and bravery on January 6.
I agree with Tom on most things, but not this. North Shropshire is a rural constituency where Labour have a lowish ceiling in all circumstances. It'd voted for Tories ever since 1832.
In such constituencies, and plenty of other places besides, only the Lib Dems have a chance.
The reason why Labour were well ahead of them in 2019 was... Brexit. North Shropshire was a heavy Leave-voting constituency, and the Lib Dems wanted to unilaterally overturn Brexit.
That issue has now faded into the background and probably the past, as many of us always said.
That's one of the biggest lessons of last night. The Brexit-Remain schism is mostly over.
That may mean the cultural war is too - with massive consequences for the Blue Wall, because so many only voted Tory temporarily, and they've been comprehensively betrayed since.
There are, of course, plenty of women out there who disagree with other women on this whole issue. I'm not here to mansplain to them; I want to listen to them. To ALL women.
The following tweets will ask 16 questions. To be answered by women only.
I make no apology for the detail within those questions, nor for requesting and hoping for as much detail as possible in the answers.
When legislative changes such as self-ID are being proposed, detail is vital if what results is to be good, effective law, not bad law.
One other thing too. Trans rights are human rights. Brilliant: we all agree on that. But it's not what the detail in the questions is about.
Once I've set out all the questions, I will not comment on any of the responses. I promise to read all of them.
I'm going to reply to this in detail. Some tweets randomly get me thinking. This was one of them.
The person who wrote it isn't bad at all. They're certainly well-meaning. But they're also a victim - of Britain's unbelievably false, lying political discourse. About EVERYTHING.
I left Britain in early 2012: having told friends it was screwed for "at least a decade". Yet even though I could see what the Tories were doing and where this would lead - I saw Brexit coming a mile off - it still took that level of distance to make me see Britain for what it is
Because you see, everything in British political discourse - including a number of things a massive majority assumes to be true - is based on lies. And I mean EVERYTHING.
The person I'm responding to here has simply swallowed one of them... without thinking or questioning it.
I've asked this question once or twice before. I make no apology for doing so again now.
How in the world are there so many men on this platform who think of themselves as progressives or socialists, yet try and dictate to women what being a woman means and involves?
How in the world are there so many so-called 'progressive' men on this platform who:
- Denounce and demonise rape survivors like JK Rowling
- Fail to see that when male-boded athletes compete in women's sports, that is an absolutely appalling injustice and total nonsense
- Think describing rapists with penises as 'women' if they happen to self-identify as such is normal, and that anyone who objects is a danger
- Honestly appear to believe they know everything there is to know about being a woman... when in practice, they know literally nothing?
