West Virginia Democratic Senator Joe Manchin announces his opposition to President Biden’s BBB plan: “Despite my best efforts, I cannot explain the sweeping Build Back Better Act in West Virginia and I cannot vote to move forward on this mammoth piece of legislation.”
Manchin (D-WV) on BBB: "My Democratic colleagues in Washington are determined to dramatically reshape our society in a way that leaves our country even more vulnerable to the threats we face."
Manchin (D-WV) on BBB: "I cannot take that risk with a staggering debt of more than $29 trillion and inflation taxes that are real and harmful to every hard-working American at the gasoline pumps, grocery stores and utility bills with no end in sight."
Manchin (D-WV) on BBB: "The American people deserve transparency on the true cost of the Build Back Better Act."
Manchin (D-WV) on BBB: "The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office determined the cost is upwards of $4.5 trillion which is more than double what the bill’s ardent supporters have claimed. They continue to camouflage the real cost of the intent behind this bill."
WH: “Senator Manchin’s comments this morning on FOX are at odds with his discussions this week with the President, with White House staff, and with his own public utterances.”
WH: “Senator Manchin promised to continue conversations in the days ahead, and to work with us to reach that common ground. If his comments on FOX and written statement indicate an end to that effort, they represent a sudden and inexplicable reversal in his position,…”
WH: “…and a breach of his commitments to the President and the Senator’s colleagues in the House and Senate.”
WH: “Just as Senator Manchin reversed his position on Build Back Better this morning, we will continue to press him to see if he will reverse his position yet again, to honor his prior commitments and be true to his word.”
WH @PressSec concludes statement on Manchin opposing BBB: “The fight for Build Back Better is too important to give up. We will find a way to move forward next year.” whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/…
WV Senator Manchin chairs the Senate Energy Cmte for the Democrats.

WH: “Senator Manchin’s statement about the climate provisions in Build Back Better are wrong. Build Back Better will produce a job-creating clean energy future for this country—including West Virginia.”
Congressional Progressives Caucus Chair Jayapal: “Today, Senator Manchin has betrayed his commitment not only to the President and Democrats in Congress but most importantly, to the American people.”
Jayapal (D-WA) on Manchin: “He routinely touts that he is a man of his word, but he can no longer say that. West Virginians, and the country, see clearly who he is.”
CPC Chair Jayapal: “We will never stop fighting to truly build back better for the American people. Too much is at stake.”
Pressley (D-MA): "The Senate must return to session immediately and bring this historic and transformational bill to a vote so Senator Manchin—and every Republican who has opposed it from the very beginning—can demonstrate, on the record, the contempt have."
Pressley (D-MA): "This fight is not over and I will not stop pushing until we have secured President Biden’s full Build Back Better agenda.”
