Among the reasons Americans lack faith in their legislators is the impression that they play by a different set of rules than the rest of us mere mortals and, in some cases, that’s entirely true. #velshi
2/17
One key area in which Members of Congress are able to do things that might be considered downright illegal if the rest of us did it, is in their ability to use non-public information to invest in public companies. #velshi
3/17
This isn’t a partisan thing “it’s done by members of both parties, and it’s validly criticized by conservative and liberal watchdogs alike. #velshi
4/17
The practice of congressional trading has come under renewed scrutiny after several lawmakers from both parties traded stocks suspiciously timed with the start of the pandemic. #velshi
5/17
Outrage ensued because - while the rest of the nation was blissfully unaware of the health and economic catastrophe that was about to unfold - some legislators seemed more concerned with lining their pockets and protecting their assets. #velshi
6/17
There *is* something of a law in place, although it’s weak tea, and that’s being charitable. The STOCK Act - otherwise known as The Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge Act - became law in 2012. #velshi
7/17
It requires members of Congress, their family members, and staffers to disclose the sale or purchase of individual stocks, bonds, and commodity futures within 45 days. #velshi
8/17
It’s meant to discourage conflicts of interest, though I am not sure it does. It doesn’t *prohibit* members of congress from doing something unethical; it just means they ultimately must disclose the actual trade. #velshi
9/17
It’s generally a disappointing piece of legislation. What was also disappointing is that, when asked about it last week, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi affirmed her view that lawmakers - and their spouses - should not be barred from trading stock. #velshi
10/17
Pelosi said, “We are a free-market economy. They should be able to participate in that.” She’s right, this is a free-market economy. #velshi
11/17
And there are several ways in which people who either get non-public information or, like journalists, can influence the performance of a stock, CAN participate in the stock market while avoiding potential or perceived conflicts of interest. #velshi
12/17
Like investing in mutual funds or ETF’s - exchange traded funds - rather than in specific companies. Or by using a blind trust- a real one - not the kind the former President used.. Or maybe there’s some middle ground that someone smarter than I am has thought of. #velshi
13/17
But the status quo is an invitation for some unscrupulous members of congress to do the wrong thing. Here’s the thing. Betty Schmo in Philadelphia does not have access to classified briefings and non-public information like members of Congress do. #velshi
14/17
And let’s say Ms. Shmo *did* get her hands on sensitive information related to the price of stock, and then uses it to buy or sell. She would be in big trouble. #velshi
15/17
It’s called insider trading. And for people like Betty who aren’t Members of Congress, it could mean a jail sentence. And rightly so. Sorry, Betty. #velshi
16/17
Look, Americans should absolutely be allowed to buy and sell stocks to grow their wealth. But they should do it without an unfair advantage over the very constituents they serve. #velshi
17/17
If Congress would fix this problem by removing the incentive to do the wrong thing, it might just go some distance in restoring the faith of the public in Congress. #velshi

I want to tell you the story of Sarah Weddington. Sarah was born in 1945 in Abilene, Texas. Sarah always thought she’d grow up to teach high school students about the epic poem “Beowulf”. By the time she got to college, her aspirations had evolved. #velshi
2/18
Despite her college dean telling her law school would be too tough for a woman, she enrolled at the University of Texas Law School in 1964: one of 40 women in a class of 1,600. #velshi
3/18
Sarah Weddington recalls a building across from the law school, where women - and some men - would sit in little nooks, at desks rescued from the garbage, and work to preserve women’s rights. #velshi

On paper, the U.S. economy is booming right now: jobs are coming back fast, businesses are open, wages are increasing, and the stock market continues to hit records. Yet some Americans are struggling to come up with enough money to pay for goods, food, and services. #velshi
2/14
It feels like everything is more expensive. It all boils down to inflation: the rise in price of goods and services. The question isn’t whether we really have inflation - we do. But just how worried should we be? #velshi
3/14
The Biden Administration had been calling it “transitory” - in other words, short term. Not permanent. But measuring inflation during an unprecedented pandemic can be tricky. America has seen inflation before. Plenty of times, actually. #velshi

I talk about democracy a lot on this show- ad nauseum, in fact. I happen to quite like it and I’m more than a little worried about it, in America, right now. The term “democracy” quite literally means “rule by the people”. #velshi
2/16
A system of government determined by the people and for the people. While it has never quite perfected it, the United States of America was a hallmark of democracy since the ink dried on the Constitution in 1787. #velshi

Things have largely improved since then: The civil war gave black men the vote. The suffrage movement gave women the vote, and the civil rights movement made voting fairer and more accessible to all. #velshi

I’m a big fan of American immigration. In fact, I’m a product of American immigration. So, when I think of Thanksgiving, other than getting sleepy from all the food, I remember that there would be no Thanksgiving if not for immigration. #velshi

Those first pilgrims who arrived at Plymouth Rock 400 years ago were grateful for the bounty of a new land in which they had arrived- and the inhabitants of that land- in this case the Wampanoag Tribe - who welcomed them, and without who’s help, they’d have starved. #velshi
3/16
In hindsight, those first immigrants maybe weren’t the best model, given the genocide and land theft that soon followed. But it’s a fact that America wouldn’t be what it is today if not for immigration. #velshi

Officials in California are investigating another potential oil spill off the coast of Huntington Beach. A sheen was spotted on the water near the pipeline that was ruptured back in October by the anchor of a cargo ship. 26,000 gallons of oil spilled into the ocean. #velshi

Accidental oil spills are a danger inherent to offshore drilling. Offshore drilling is a lot of things - it's extremely lucrative, and extremely dangerous to the environment. But it continues unabated and we are about to see a lot more of it. #velshi

Last week, 80 million acres of the Gulf of Mexico were placed on the auction block, just like rare antiques or a coveted piece of art. Except, the buyers won’t handle their sacred assets with care. Quite the opposite actually. #velshi

Today is President Biden’s 79th birthday - making him the oldest sitting President in American history. And, for a man his age, he’s got a pretty good bill of health. #velshi
2/19
We know this because President Biden went for a physical yesterday and his doctor released a very detailed, very honest summary of the President’s health. #velshi
3/19
It reads exactly as you’d expect a health report to read. Lots of medical jargon, but easy enough to understand if you don’t have a medical degree. It’s incredibly transparent: Joe Biden is not in perfect shape, but he’s everything you’d expect a 79 yr old man to be. #velshi
