The fact that right wing populists have such a delusional understanding of how representative they are doesn't make them less dangerous.
It actually makes them more dangerous because it makes anti-democratic violence (a la January 6, for example) seem like the only viable option for implementing what they see as "the will of the people" that's been unfairly thwarted by "evil forces" in politics and the media.
Fringe far right populists draping themselves in the mantle of "the real patriots" is a very old story. Here's a flyer from a group called "We the People" from 1955 that was comprised of some of the most virulent antisemites, racists, and authoritarians of the era.
"We the People" was one of the earliest organizations pushing for Goldwater to run for President (as early as 1959). Goldwater spoke at their 1959 convention alongside several right wingers who, by the late 1960s, were straight up neo-Nazis.
As you can tell from that 1961 piece by Everingham, "We the People" had determined that Barry was probably a pinko like Eisenhower, and so they cooled on him. Much like the Trumpist right has kicked many a "conservative" to the curb over the past few years in the name of purity.
