Now here is someone who is making lemonade.

We can’t do much during a covid wave. But making life a tiny bit easier for those bearing the burden of caring for patients who are severely ill is well worth some praise.

Better yet, we should join her in assisting with snow removal for those who have extra stress either due to illness or caring for someone who is sick.

Neighbours and family can shovel driveways and walkways for the less abled and essential workers.

We can send care packages to hospitals and places where essential workers are performing their work. We can leave a coffee gift card for sanitation workers. A thank you card with gift cards for grocery workers. Purchase an extra food bank package when we shop for groceries.

This is the season of giving. Essential workers give every day throughout the year.

I for one am grateful for their effort and steadfast support that keeps us alive. Utilities workers, truck drivers, rail workers, grocery clerks, snow removal workers, mail delivery.

They all deserve to be reminded that society appreciates their efforts. We literally couldn’t survive without them.

If you know a healthcare professional or healthcare system worker, make them a meal or buy them a pizza or subway gift card.

Healthcare workers have been overburdened for too long. Their burnout and exhaustion means our demise. So whatever we can do to ease a bit of the burden is helping.

If you know someone in healthcare, a medical professional, admin staff, even a janitor, ask them what they need.

We need them to stay healthy and strong. We need to help them be resilient and able to carry out their essential work. We can be aides to their incredible sacrifice by making it known they are appreciated and that we are grateful.

Human beings are capable of sustained effort when others help out.

We are all familiar with the proverb that “it takes a village to raise a child.”

Well it takes a nation to survive a war. And we are at war with covid. No doubt a united sustained effort is required.

If we ever hope to get to the other side of covid, we need to help each other survive and deal with the emotional and physical exhaustion we are experiencing after two years of continuous pandemic protocols and social restrictions.

We also need to petition, strongly and forcefully, the provincial governments which continue to ignore covid health and safety measures to protect the population. Ford, Kenney, Moe and Horgan must respond to a groundswell of voters demanding better management of the pandemic.

Ignore the covid deniers.

Deny them the satisfaction of acknowledgement and recognition. We need to drown out their selfish and egotistical whines with a much louder demand for appropriate measures now that Omicron is confirmed airborne.

Covid has always been airborne, but Omicron is a game changer. We do not have the luxury of learning by trial and error what measures are required.

We know the problem: extremely contagious airborne disease. So air quality is a MUST in any indoor facility.

Cloth masks are useless protection. Covid isn’t an excuse for a fashion statement or political advocacy printed on your mask. Reusable masks should be abandoned and single use masks at minimum 3 ply and preferably N95 be adopted.

Some people are going to need help purchasing masks. The capacity to produce them is secure. The funds to purchase them are not.

Those who can afford to help financially need to step up now.

Buy a box of N95 masks for a teacher, a grocery clerk, a cashier at a pharmacy.

Start demanding air quality assessments & solutions for daycares, schools, office buildings, grocery stores, & other essential indoor spaces.

Certainly our provincial governments will be required to address these health & safety needs. Track records means they will need a nudge.

Stop thinking about what you are being deprived and start thinking about what you can contribute to the cause.

Every citizen has a stake in the survival of our society. So start acting like it. What can you do to ease the burden of those tasked with providing essential needs?

Every little contribution helps and contributes to our collective survival. There are overwhelmingly more people who want to survive covid than flaunt covid restrictions. Ignore those who seek to exacerbate covid. Make your own contribution to end this nightmare.

Help someone who is saving lives and making sacrifices to get us through this 5th wave.

That’s how people survived emotionally, spiritually and physically during world wars and past pandemics.

They all took on a piece of the burden.

A great American president once said, “ ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.”

That sentiment is required now of every person in every nation. But I would change country to community, country and the world’s human population.

We will survive if we work together to ease our collective burdens. This is a global pandemic. Every nation is impacted and every person is affected.

One grain of sand can do nothing. But bags of sand can withstand the waves. 🌊

How can you contribute to the cause?

That’s what will make the difference in turning the tides on covid. We work together or perish in isolation.

Figure out if you’re a whiny snivelling egoist libertarian or a citizen willing to help any way you can. We are our own heroes.

We save ourselves and each other or cower in fear and/or rage in frustration waiting for the government to do their job.

The choice is ours.
