You know those spice collector machines in #DuneMovie … we’d never do that on earth…Would we…?

(h/t @georgehullcom)
….would we??

Well actually there’s a plan to mine entire swathes of the deep ocean floor, with no giant worms to defend the seabed…
(Unlike Dune’s sandworms, the bobbit worm is found in shallower waters and only reaches 3m in length)
But there is loads of sea-life on the deep ocean floor, it lives on a different timescale to us, making it very sensitive to impacts such as seabed mining.

(h/t @MBARI_News #CreatureFeature)
Lots of animals in the dark depths rely on crystal clarity of the deep ocean waters to communicate and hunt, sediment from mining threatens to blind animals like the amazing barreleye fish
Want to know more about the amazing life in the deep ocean, why this ecosystem is vital to all life on earth & the threats from seabed mining?

The @UN🇺🇳 is due to agree a new Treaty to protect the #HighSeas.

New study identifies 9 amazing places in international waters that desperately need protection; a thread.

(n.b. links to report/studies at the end!)
1⃣ The Salas y Gómez and Nazca Ridges are connected submarine mountain ranges with the peak between them located about 2,000 kilometres from mainland Chile.

Seamounts in these waters offer refuge to both resident and migratory species, including leatherback sea turtles. Seamounts in these waters offer refuge to both resident and migratory species, including leatherback sea turtles.
2⃣ The Costa Rica Dome: Efforts are underway to protect the Costa Rica Dome area within national waters and on the high seas in recognition of the uniqueness of its ecological drivers and the life it supports. The nutrient-rich waters of the Costa Rica Dome attract a high diversity of species, including yellowfin tuna.
