This isn't a well organized thread (more of a rant) so feel free to mute, but let's talk about some things we know about Covid-19 and how that should inform our public policy decisions because it feels like the world has gone insane and there is a huge disconnect right now.
The original strain of Covid-19 was more transmittable than your average virus and very deadly to certain parts of the population (very skewed by age). Children were and remain relatively low-risk. Vaccines did a good job protecting against spread & severe illness w that strain.
Covid-19 was shown to be very seasonal and hits in waves. Delta variant originated in India in late 2020. It was far more transmissible than the original variant w ~same severity. A lot more people got Covid and waves lasted longer, but we had vaccines.
Vaccines were less effective at preventing transmission, but still very effective against severe illness. Booster enhanced protection from transmission. You could indisputably see the difference in hospitalization and deaths between vaccinated and unvaccinated.
Every state, red and blue, that released data showed ~6-8X variation in hospitalizations and even more apparent difference in deaths. Vaccinated also were sick for less time. Same data exists for almost every country.
Now Omicron appears more transmittable than Delta, but preliminary evidence also suggests it's less virulent than previous strains & waves do not last as long. Vaccines, even w boosters, do not seem effective at preventing transmission, but still protect against severe illness.
So when we started, we didn’t have knowledge on how 2 protect people when they got sick or tools to prevent it. That’s what justified extreme measures and even some that w questionable effectiveness and high costs. But that justification was based on the idea they were temporary.
Then we got those tools. We developed vaccines that essentially make Covid-19 comparable to the flu (a false claim made early on that becomes real w vaccines & possibly Omicron), several key treatments (monoclonal antibodies), & testing. We learned that spread is rare outside..
that spread in schools is below surrounding communities, that air circulation (ex in airplanes) played a major role etc. Also learned surgical masks are effective at limiting spread, but cotton masks are very limited. More importantly, most people get infected at home where...
they aren’t going to wear masks anyways. Mask mandates have not correlated well with lower spread and that # will clearly go down more w Omicron.
We also learned there are really high economic, social, educational, etc. costs to many early measures that were not considered.
On vaccine mandates: Viewed it as something gov't shouldn’t have a role in (for or against). Case weaker w Omicron bc vaccinated still spread at a high rate. Argument would be to help w hospital capacity, but less critical with # unvaccinated & w/o natural immunity dwindling.
All of that knowledge and tools should have significantly shifted our approach. But too many viewed the previous measures as the new norm, refused to adjust to changes in the data, and can’t accept that the virus will not magically go away if you just do the right things.
It's also clear that some (health bueracrats and politicians) viewed the pandemic as an opportunity to grab power and enact changes theyr otherwise supported and they don’t want to give that up.
We now have to learn to live with the virus even during waves. Travel restrictions make no sense when it’s already everywhere. Shutting things down, especially schools has no real end goal and do little to stop a wave. You shouldn’t be doing asymptomatic testing.
If someone has symptoms, stay home. Get vulnerable vaccinated and protected. Then start treating it like we do the flu. Boosters available every year to whoever wants them, surveillance for large outbreaks, keep developing treatments, get people better access to at-home testing.
Anyways, just wanted to put my thoughts in one thread. It's really frustrating watching so many government officials and large platforms keep acting like it's March 2020 and trying to force that mindset on others. We need to face reality & move forward together.

We get more data every day strongly suggesting there is a decoupling between cases and hospitalizations with Omicron.
I don't understand people (correctly) noting that data suggests it is more transmittable while downplaying data from the same places that it is milder.
More direct evidence for the conclusion that Omicron is significantly less virulent than previous variants and it's not just vaccine/previous infection driving better outcomes:
He would be doing himself a massive political favor too, but he can’t do it.
The mindset that people can forever avoid getting Covid-19 if they just do the right things has become too central to how they talk about the virus despite obviously being wrong
Reality is that this virus is too transmittable to avoid it. The goal was to buy ourselves enough time to develop vaccines and effective treatments that make outcomes comparable to other viruses we already deal with. That’s exactly what happened, but too many never accepted it.
Instead, they spent too long pretending that just doing the right things will mean you never get Covid. It was never true or realistic. Now we have to learn to live with Covid-19. The sooner people, especially policy makers, accept that, the better off we will all be.
As plenty of epidemiologists are pointing out in the replies, this is just wrong. We can take actions to shift when people get Covid-19 and how often, but overwhelming majority of people will get it at some point.
And honestly her feed is exactly the kind of stuff that has made people exhausted and feeling like some health officials want to trap us in this state forever.
The message being sent here is so backwards.
They are basically anti vaccine because they know people view vaccines as a path back to normalcy and they don’t want that option available. They view slightly less risk as worth the price of giving up activities they don’t care about. But they want that forced on everyone.
I forgot who it was, but some journalist last week suggested Biden is being hurt by things beyond his control Covid-19. Even on that topic, it's just false. The Biden admin is actively creating a problem with their approach.
They could change directions and policies to stop focusing on cases, promote the fact that vaccinated people are mostly safe from hospitalization and death, and that we should be returning to normal. They are choosing to instead promote fear and panic without a path to normality.
They should be shouting from the rooftops about early Omicron data showing it being relatively mild, but instead they are arguing over what extra restrictions we should add and mandates to enact.
Just incredible framing here from an alleged news organization.
These are illegal immigrants. It's a plan to legalize their status, which clearly isn't primarily a budget topic despite Dems trying to pass it off as one and being rejected for the 3rd time in a year.
Back in September, Dems proposed including a path to citizenship under reconciliation. They were told it's not primarily a budgetary issue. Then they tried to include legal residency instead. Also rejected. And now they tried to do it as work permits/visas.
It’s also incredible that Dems are pushing this in the middle of a border crisis with a large increase in migrants without legitimate asylum claims coming here based on the belief that this administration will let them stay.
McCullough is an insane conspiracy theorist that’s no different than a 9/11 truther or someone who believes the moon landing is fake. You can oppose excessive restrictions and government actions without promoting crazy people.
Anyone who recognizes how conspiracies theories work sees what is happening. People are rightly upset about the actions of those in power and these crazy grifters are taking advantage of them.
This is the guy they are talking about. This is no different than 9/11 truthers selectively using planning documents about planes crashing into buildings to claim US government instead of Al Qaeda was behind 9/11. Only here it’s Pharma and world governments instead of China.
