I have seen a lot of hate towards the new startup show on Twitter and while that's not unreasonable, I do think that's highly exaggerated! Here's a short thread containing my views on why @sharktankindia is doing a great work: ⬇️
Lets first see why people are hating it?
It had drama..
It was scripted..
Those startups are real startups to start with and even if there is drama (which there is tbh), what's the harm?
Would you guys want to watch 1 hr of Startups pitching metrics to a VC daily? I won't...
And to start with, it's not about us.
People who are interested in the startup ecosystem already have access to "educational & serious" content via Youtube etc
It's about educating the mainstream and that's only possible if people watch it to start with
Lets take the second point:
The content - I don't know why this is a massive concern to start with. For ex: The yesterday's pitch & review of "Head and Heart" is very much standard to how a VC pitch goes
The questions were natural and so were the reviews
Sure, not all of it is incredibly impressive or serious but as I said earlier that's not the point
The purpose of the show is to reach the mainstream and that's what it is doing
Lets go into why this awareness is so critical?
If you analyse India outside the Tier1 bubble, most of the parents still have no idea of what a startup means: All of their perception of it is just a dark & risky adventure which most fail at
And if this remains the perception..
The future will never be accessible for those with big dreams in those cities if we are not able to add some fun & glamour to startups
Yesterday was the first time there was a real talk on startups in my family and that's true for multiple families across India!
I think people are having unfair expectations from Shark Tank because of its US or British Dragon Den. I personally watched both shows but we have to acknowledge the reality that the condition in India is far behind those countries
And This is an excellent step to reduce the gap
End of Thread:
This is not against any of the points others have made, I do think the quality of content can be improved
I just think the goal is increased societal acceptance and if we view by that lens only, it's not that bad maybe?
Thanks for Reading!
