(1) One of my sons, who grew up in Wisbech, is visiting from USA. His verdict on the state of Norfolk Street is unprintable. Where do the gangs of idle and unkempt men lurking in the road all come from? They don’t appear to work, so where does their money come from?
(2) I am guessing these men are Slovak, Roma, or perhaps Bulgarian. I know of many decent hardworking Bulgarians in the town, and they must be appalled at these scroungers. I feel really sorry for the few ‘proper’ shops in the street.
(3) I don’t feel unsafe going to Norfolk Street, as I am male and fairly large. I do feel disgusted by what I see down there, though, especially when I remember the decent place it used to be. Now, the Post Office and the Music Centre are like islands in a sea of s**t.
(3) I am not one of those who believes that Wisbech was once a precious jewel of charm and tranquility. No, it was always a rough and ready place with huge pockets of poverty and criminality. But now, this one street shames the decent people of the town.
(4) There are thousands of decent, law-abiding and hard working people from Eastern Europe who have made Wisbech their home, pay their taxes and live good lives. But the flotsam and jetsam in Norfolk Street are a different matter completely.
