🔺 Us: "Blockchain is forever, but identity isn't."
Communities position themselves differently to attract a particular subset of audience.
BAYC might be perceived as an "exclusive frat club" by some and a status symbol / sense of community by others.
Dissonance in PFP communities
While a PFP in itself remains static, the community that bought into the project can and will change over time. @crypto_coven has shown how you can include your community in shaping identity
The true self we choose to embody is highly contextual.
Who you are now is different than who you were in 2011.
Examples of what make up our IRL and URL "selves"
IRL: age, gender, geography, political affiliation, clothing
URL: username, bio, follower count, avatar, NFTs
The double-edged sword of PFPs
PFPs allow ppl to have fun, choose how they want to express and portray themselves online. But it also allows ppl to make nascent assumptions solely based on the PFP shown - which once again, doesn't encapsulate the totality of the person.
Identity management
Unintentional x passive can lead to a more authentic, raw self. But for people to carve out their desired experiences (how their identity is shaped and interpreted), being more intentional and active could be the way to go.
The Johari window
This framework could help you better manage your identity especially if you want to be more active and intentional.
Caveat: You need constant feedback from ppl around you/within your circle so that you're aware of the impact of your behavior.
Anonymity and pseudonymity
Meeting real people w real faces brings legitimacy to the space. While anonymity and pseudonymity help people feel safe not divulging information, it could also bring about more unwanted trolls.
There needs to be a well-protected and curated space.
🟠 Me - Dame in Web1 and Web2
Dame1: AOL days where there was a level of detachment and physical-digital divide
Dame2: Exploring brand identity and making a conscious effort to bring more parts of physical self to the online space e.g. identifying as non-binary
Dame in Web3
Started becoming known as Dame.eth (happened almost by accident). @jacksondame was compelled to further explore their online identity and personal brand, even experimenting through PFPs and a private alt (@0xDame).
tl;dr
- There needs to be more intentionality behind community identities in web3
- PFPs are fun but can also bring about trolls and can cause dissonance
- On a "you" level, explore being more intentional and active - use the Johari window
As we dig into big questions around the societal and cultural implications from crypto, it's helpful to have a good understanding of the basics of web3, DAOs, NFTs, & DeFi.
So, we created a lil web3 starter pack for those brand new to the space 👇
Web3 is about a few key themes or human issues: future of work, digital identities, decentralization of power, interoperability, etc. So the first question in web3 should be: what do you care about?
🍎 Earlier this month, @HipCityReg led a workshop on the need for web3 to expand its cultural reference points.
How do we learn from our favorite person’s teacher?
How do their inputs influence what we create?
Here are the highlights 👇
We started off with this concept:
There is no single moment in time. Gen-Zs in LA are dressing as if it's 2003.
Algorithmic feeds have seeped into the real world; what it means for creativity and reference points is limitless.
