Why try meditating in 2022, a thread:

🧵 ⬇️
1/

First, a preface. The word meditation is often substituted for mindfulness. That’s like substituting the word exercise for the word healthy.

In the context of this thread, meditation is a practice of concentrating on one object, such as the breath, for 10-30 minutes.
2/

Regardless of time period, meditation is a difficult practice to master. However, the case can be made that in this era, as the supply of distractions rise + our attention continues to fragment into smaller pieces, it becomes increasingly difficult to master.
3/

Precisely because our environment continues to shape us in this way does the need to practice meditation become more relevant.

Why?

Because it builds the opposite skills that our “omniavailable”environment is training, especially via social media and push notifications.
4/

The main skills combating omniavailability culture are:

• sustainable periods of continuous stable attention

• ability to remain physically relaxed without compromising mental focus

• nonjudgmental awareness of thoughts, feelings, and beliefs, especially while working
5/

If you’re a high performer of any sort, you recognize that results are a result of:

• how long you can focus (continuous stable attention)

• the quality of your focus (relaxed concentration)

• ability to incorporate feedback (nonjudgmental awareness of progress)
6/

This information is not new. Meditation is a 25+ century practice. It is certified #lindy and its wisdom has been distilled in countless books/talks/resources.

Let’s archive omniavailability culture in 2022 through intentional counteraction.
7/

A little bit about me: I’m currently pursuing a masters in neuroscience @KingsCollegeLon and recently graduated a meditation teacher training program. I started meditating daily in 2016 and it continues to illuminate my mind with some sayable, mostly ineffable insights.

Disclaimer: there are many definitions of meditation & within those definitions there are various traditions. I choose to highlight, in my view, the most accessible form, although I realize this practice wasn’t developed in a vacuum. I’m learning something new every day.
