Before checking, you need to find where the air is coming from. It's usually from a rectangular, circular or linear diffuser, or from a grill. Usually on the ceiling, but sometimes on a wall. Here are some examples.

1. LOOK AND LISTEN
I'm always looking up at the vents and listening when walking into a room. People think that's weird. Start doing that. You can usually hear the air moving. If you hear it turning on and off, you know it's not being run properly. It should always be on.

This is what I did when I was getting my booster dose and couldn't hear the airflow in the waiting room. Got it fixed.

2. CREATE A DIY AIRFLOW DECTOR
This is my own invention. Patent pending.
Attach a tissue ripped in half to the end of a stick with masking tape. A broom or meter stick works. (Yes, I've used this before)

Hold the stick up to the where the air is coming out. The tissue will flap. You can hold it up to the return air and the tissue should get sucked in. You'll know there's airflow. If there's no airflow, inquire.
This doesn't tell you if there's fresh air though.

3. CO2 Monitoring
Using a CO2 monitor tells you if there is sufficient fresh air based on the CO2 levels. Aranet4 appears to be the official one chosen by the #covidco2 and #COVIDisAirborne crowd on Twitter.
