Especially when you understand that social media teams have been turned into junior pink collar roles rather than senior strategic tech roles…

It’s probably a young woman who has to deal with all of this.

Now obviously I agree that this creates a conflict. I’ve known many a female cop who would never have the red carpet rolled out like this.

Also, the Police Comms team desperately trying to look inclusive and cool is hilarious. They shouldn’t be using their staff as props.

But they should also know that this would occur. I do not agree with the mocking of this cop’s appearance and I don’t know their story. But the conflict still exists even if the mean girls and trolls aren’t being nice.

My first impression was:

Why on earth are the Police’s Comms team exploiting their staff in this manner?

Where are the senior Comms people? Why are they so sloppy?

Again as valid as the questions are about nail polish and exceptions (I think that can be easily answered if you engage with the issue in good faith)… but why are Comms teams allowed to do this to the officer and the obviously junior (and very silly) social media people?

This is the big problem with the culture wars and content factory in general is that around and behind every single one of these posts and ratios and bans and “the algorithm” - is people appearing in and managing and moderating “content”.

Who is sticking up for them?

Who is asking if it is appropriate for the enforcement arm of government to use employees in this manner, in ridiculous rainbow washing, exposing them both to all this “content”?

What? So the Police look friendly during this time of authoritarian overreach?

NOT saying anyone was threatening. Saying in general that living this day in day out is really bad for mental health. I’ve been in this game for a very long time and there’s not much I haven’t seen, and even I get bloody worn out. And I’m not a 25 yo marketing and Comms grad.

Again this comes back to everyone completely ignoring their own contribution when it’s convenient. It’s one of my biggest gripes with GC - the swarm showing up is incredibly hostile and unpleasant even if individually it’s harmless and they’ve got a point.

It’s why I don’t involve myself anymore because I reflected on how it is for the people that have to deal with these childish pile ons from - ironically- women claiming to defend women with no thought for the young women on the receiving end.

For me, it’s skews mostly on the direction of grown ass women making the lives of young women with no power bloody stressful with no regard for their well-being or welfare.

And it upsets me that they laugh whilst doing it.

Nobody ever considers how this stuff is made.

I got into this business to make people’s lives easier and better and to provide opportunity.

Not to make daily life a living hell for juniors in an invisible, unappreciated, underpaid job.

When I say that even if you have a point, your conduct matters too… this is what I mean.

And this is why social media moderation is so heavily weighted on use of reply functions.

But none of them will ever listen. I’ve tried. Let’s make it about the nail polish.
