An aviator’s perspective: CFIT is real. Can happen to the best of pilots depending on contributory factors. Is it ‘Pilot Error’? Straight answer is ‘No’. Read on to know more…
If an aircraft flies into terrain due pilot error, it’s uncontrolled flight or UFIT and not CFIT. Therein lies the subtle difference. Why does CFIT happen? Many reasons… could be disorientation, LOSA (Loss of Situational Awareness), Subtle incapacitation, Nav Aid malfunction….
The hallmark of CFIT is that the aircrew is unaware of impending collision with terrain. The aircraft is very much under control till the final phase of impact.
Is CFIT classified as Human Error (Aircrew) or HE(A)? It depends. What caused CFIT will have to be pinpointed first. There have been CFIT cases on fast jets due to G-LOC (G induced Loss of Consciousness) or on airliners due to Nav Systems malfunction. So, not all CFIT are HE(A).
Is there a conspiracy angle in this high profile crash? There’s just one answer to it and it’s a big NO.

A thread on Russian Bombs.... Nomenclature used on Russian Bombs could be confusing even for fighter pilots who drop them regularly. Here's a thread on some basics....
Most Russian bomb nomenclatures would have AB embedded in it. eg: FAB, OFAB, ODAB, BetAB, KAB etc. AB stands for Avia Bomba which translates to Aerial Bomb.
FAB is a commonly used dumb bomb and stands for Fugahsnaya Avia Bomba or High Explosive Bomb. An OFAB on the other hand is Oskolochno Fugasnaya Avia Bomba or Fagmentation HE Aerial Bomb
