Non-Black folks in #DC, if you’re making New Years resolutions add making a commitment to learn about and share widely the DC outside of the existence of monuments (many built by enslaved Africans), the White House, and Congress.

However, nothing is more important than hearing from DC folks directly.

“The Nine Lives of Marion Barry” will correct everything you think you know about DC’s Mayor for Life, and why his life and work are no joke.

#BlackDC #ChocolateCity

He began as a sharecropper with his family, later earned a Masters Degree in Organic Chemistry at Fisk, and led powerful political movements in DC.

Specifically, police violence as documented in “The People and the Police”.

We’re often asked why we don’t believe community policing will work if we haven’t tried. The truth is it’s been tried over and over. It has never worked and it never will.

Mayor Barry tried to make it work. #BlackDC #ChocolateCity

Will this be the moment of reckoning for @DCPoliceDept by the people of D.C? Or are we going to continue to pretend these are isolated incidents of police brutality by a "few bad apples"? The choice remains ours. #StopMPD #DefundDCPolice
This kind of brutality is not new for MPD, in D.C., and certainly not on Good Hope Rd. and 16th St. Southeast, but it is always unacceptable. It mirrors the experience of Derrick “Quan” Johnson at almost the same location on December 26, 2019. bit.ly/quanblmdc
We expect Chief Contee will do little more than give a measured response given his complicity in the misconduct by the Gun Recovery Unit against Black people. theappeal.org/dc-gru/

Police overtime is a BIG deal in DC. You may have heard about @MayorBowser and @councilofdc robbing health care funds during a pandemic to pay a $43 million @DCPoliceDept overtime bill, but do you know how much overtime individual cops make? (1/11)
We’ve got a list of the highest overtime earners for FY2019. The 25 MPD officers with the most overtime all made over $100,000 in overtime that year! Some of them more than doubled their regular salary! Here are the highest earners: (2/11)
Coming in at Number 5 on the list is Kirk Del Po, a Detective Grade II. His base salary was $95,515 in FY2019. How much overtime did he make? $145,265. He went from a $96k a year job to a $241k job. (3/11)

For years, Black Lives Matter Global Network (@Blklivesmatter) has undermined the work & integrity of local chapters -- including BLM DC.

Today we went public. Read our statement here:

blmchapterstatement.com #BlackLivesMatter #BLM10
Despite millions being donated to the network, local chapters have lacked support & resources from national leadership. As a result, much of our local community work continues to be erased. #BlackLivesMatter #BLM10
To be very clear -- @Blklivesmatter Global Network is NOT accountable to local communities nor local chapters. The newly announced formations, BLM Grassroots and the PAC do not have the support of the majority of chapters. #BlackLivesMatter #BLM10
