As we prepare for the Ryan Pace Bowl, and Matt Nagy’s last home game, I’m reflecting on (IMO) Nagy’s biggest mistake in how he approached 2021. He never realized that Justin Fields’ development was paramount for the organization (present and future). 1/
Fields was his lifeline and he neglected to understand that.
Instead Nagy remained stubbornly focused on his “system” that had churned through multiple QBs and produced the same paltry results since the end of the 2018 season.
2/
The vast majority of time and energy from him, Flip and Lazor should’ve been spent in learn mode, what does Justin do best, what concepts does he prefer, what doesn’t he understand and using that as the starting point for the offense.
3/
If that resulted in a big deviation in from what Nagy has done or wanted to do, so be it. It was the right thing to do.
Instead, he remained rigid. This was put on display in that fateful CLE game that shone a bright light on the fact that
4/
Nagy can only coach a system he was taught and not adjust to the available talent. That game right there sealed Nagy’s fate, IMO.
A complex game plan with zero indication anything had been curated specifically for Justin’s talents and where he was in his nascent development. 5/
Here’s hoping the next coaching staff is a radical departure from the past four seasons. When the game starts, what your players know is more important than what the coaches know. 6/
Know what your players do best, identify weaknesses in your opponents that you can exploit and game plan week-to-week. Cheers to fresh start in 2022, #Bears fam.
