There is something that's been eating me inside and out and I have not been able to articulate this until now, but I am gonna try because I think it is very important. At least to me it is. The sickness of our neoliberal world impacts both the middle class and the poor.
When you see generational poverty, it is easy to see it outright. It's extreme. It's often hopeless to the individual. It's bleak and the political space uses poverty as a political tool. One for explaining "bad choices" and one that exploits it as "immoral". But it's a veneer.
It's used as a political football. Two angles: you are a bad person and undeserving or my goodness this is so tragic we must save you with a pittance... Charity ... Hand outs... No structural change... No real change.
But then we have the middle class angle. Everyone is gonna do great if we just give them a new program to take a real problem and make it a little less daunting. A pittance. No structural changes but we discipline labor with taxes and precarity and enticements to become rich...
So we lure the middle class and poor and dangle college or the military respectively as a way out and up.
We burden the middle class with lots of pay ins. Lots of debt. Lots of impossible debt... Because once you start the path to leave your station... Your birth class... You are expected to pay in to get in.
It starts with expectations on how we dress. How we communicate. The language we use. The cars we drive. The homes we buy and the way we maintain our health. The family pet. Saving for our kids to go to college. The vacations we are expected to go on. The volunteer work we do.
The burden only worsens as we lay the tax burden down. The penalties and the guilt of providing for the family. The overall is a lesson in violence... the path is told in commercials with smiling families with nice clean clothes, washboard abs and perfect teeth
The problem is when the debt burden comes due... It's all on you too. You were expected to know how to do this. You were expected to know how to manage money. Lessons many if not most are never taught. I am not talking macroeconomics, I am talking about the personal checkbook.
You are expected to be a savvy investor with a portfolio. Never mind divorces from the stress and strain of this ladder climbing.
If the stock market crashes. If your investments collapse. It's on you and it's of course rich people problems. If they lie they have family wealth to save them. They have the network to lift them. Or at least the appearance of it...
At least the very appearance of being well off is a mirage you are expected to maintain.
It gets worse because as you move up the social ladder bearing all the set and pain you had to bear to get there, you are now expected to be polite and unflappable. To demonstrate no matter how much suicidal stress you are under to maintain the illusion.. that you are polite.
And should the stress and strain be too much, once you get there, you will be rejected as a commoner who still misbehaves.
Never mind the expectations and glass ceilings. Never mind that once you "get there" you realize you really aren't there ... You are in a no man's land where you are still rejected one layer up by the elites and gate keepers of the good life.
You are now an unsympathetic case. You make too much to be seen as "in need" and you are hated by both the rich who want to maintain their exclusive birthrite social circles and the poor who mistake you as rich and the laws which say you don't need help.
You wake up wondering how you will survive. You are hated by your spouse because you have to kill yourself to maintain a lifestyle you were sold as onward and upward. Your spouse wonders why the neighbors can do this and that but not your family...
So you are expected to do whatever you can to keep the roof on, to smile, to be capable of maintaining this ruse with a smile and politeness.
When the pressure becomes to great... The rafters start looking like a good place to toss a rope...
But yes... Politeness is ruled as the currency of the decent. The good. The "right" people... Yet... When you are on top... It's easy to get a distorted picture of pain and suffering. Elitism is the currency the ladder climbers can never achieve & when they do... Success! Right?
Politeness is the currency those doing well trade in. It is a currency to let you know this is what it looks like when every day is your lucky day. This is the currency that weeds out the class jumpers & those living in the big houses with the elite couture... Pets... Lifestyles.
It's the thing we aspire to be like.. to want to be them... To want to live with a smile, no rotting teeth... No shitty oodles of noodles... No fear of answering the phone
And when you realize you will never belong... And all you worked for crumbles... You die.

I worry that folks boil class down to simply dollars and cents & not about access, privilege, snobbery & condescension. Class is a much bigger deal that involves access & precarity. Not financial precarity alone, but access to circles & opportunities. In particular opportunities.
People born on third base thinking they hit a triple and all the underlying assumptions & elitism that goes with it... The lottery of birth & the blessings from the Ivory Tower that allow some to be absolute assholes yet simultaneously get away with it because of that privilege.
It skews social mobility more so than financial mobility. It is a gate keeping system that really collects privilege whilst simultaneously bludgeoning those not in the club, silencing them from the same opportunities & stations afforded to privileged people. No idea how to fix it

FYI lockdowns only hurt the people economically becuz people believe the government is broke & the Neoliberal assholes in office allowed that ignorance to be a rally cry. When you know what could be done to make people whole & still keep the vulnerable safe, it changes everything

Psst Federal Programs are absolutely NEVER paid for with tax dollars. All government spending is newly created money. Every single time. Not something someday.. happening at this moment and always.
In fact your tax dollars come from the Federal Government. Just like concert tickets are not required to fund the concert but they are for redemption. And just like the concert hall doesn't need those stubs to fund new concerts...
Get it? #MMT
Cash used to be burned in colonial times, now it is shredded and deleted. The government doesn't need your money. It just needs us to need it to pay taxes so it can provision itself.

Modern Monetary Theory is a description of macroeconomic operations. Like the manual. It describes what happens when various levers are pulled. There is not country "doing MMT" because MMT describes the good and the bad of a modern money economy. 1/x
If a country adds extra rules that serve no purpose but they do it anyways that doesn't change a thing. They have created a self imposed rule or ritual. It impacts results sure... But it is both unecessary and often stupid and unproductive.
If a neoconservative government with neoliberal beliefs towards markets and globalism comes to power, they appoint their people to "man" the levers. Just because the results are absolutely abhorrent doesn't disprove MMT. It shows what happens when a hammer is given to a murderer.

Funny thing... We spend all this time trying to think of how to frame economic messages for those who are still not convinced of #MMT or have no understanding. 1/x
But when a movie comes out targeting the outlandish avoidance our MSM goes thru to keep us happy, laughing, depressed and struggling but always distracted, people have a fit... Not left enough, no class awareness... Not enough xyz... Not global enough... Too American... Whatever.
.. Fact is the people we need to reach are not always going to be able to have a full class analysis as the word class has been tainted and people expect you to trot out Trotsky or some other boogiemen that propaganda has fed them thanks McCarthy and the intelligence community.

So if something is already the way it is but people don't know, then that means an education is required.

Nothing need be implemented... just education.

Why does this matter?

If you see someone pouring gas in the windshield wiper fluid, or transmillion fluid in the gas tank, you might want to inform them they are about to trash their vehicle... or at least show them the proper place to pour those fluids.

Same with economics.
When you see someone saying they need to raise federal taxes to pay for things, you know they are pouring antifreeze into the transmission.
