Omicron, our experience. A 🧵...

Jan 1, YC woke feeling ill. With Omicron EXPLODING in Sydney thx to the combined shittery of our idealogue PM and premier (Jesus take the f#cking wheel), I spent the next 3 hours scouring chemists and supermarkets for tests for our family of five (EC's bf is staying with us)

$90 later, my boy was Covid+; the rest of us returned neg results. PCR test next, right? The simple answer would be yes. The reality is, it’s almost impossible. Sitting in a car for hours on end with a sick child b4 being turned away from multiple sites is the reality.

In the end, we gave up… which is exactly what this govt wants. We have Covid, but we aren’t counted in those shockingly high numbers coming out of NSW. And there are thousands just like us.

My son is a strapping 6ft5, ridiculously fit and health-conscious kid who plays high-level soccer. He’s also double-vaxed. Covid levelled him. Fever, chills, body aches, headache, nausea, fatigue. 2 days of hell then, 2 more days til he was past the worst of it.

Jan 2, my daughter got Covid for her birthday. So did her bf, who is isolating with us. As did I. We are all double-vaxed but as our PM so hugely f#cked up ordering enough vaccines for us all, we aren’t due for our boosters until Feb. All except my SO, who's a frontline worker.

He was boostered 2 weeks ago, and surrounded by four Covid+ people, he remains Covid-free.

Headaches and nausea were my symptoms, and the fatigue. By all the gods, the fatigue. I’m 4 days in and while most of my symptoms are petering out (still heavy in the chest and a guttural cough), the fatigue lingers.

‘Mild’ is the word used to describe my symptoms, and that’s because none of us required hospitalisation, putting strain on a system that is breaking (if not broken).

There’s no doubt being vaxed helped us through it. There’s no doubt the booster my husband got protected him within our plague-house. And from our experience, there is NO DOUBT our govt has royally f#cked up its “response” to this outbreak.

We are hundreds of dollars in for RATs, and we are privileged that we can buy them (when we can find them). We know that $60 for 2 packs of 2 RATs is someone’s meals for the week; that the hundreds spent is someone’s rent. Yet still, this govt puts profit over people.

There is price-gouging on RATs, testing centres are overwhelmed or shutdown, and we’re told to not look at the positive case numbers but rather the hospitalisations. I call bullshit. The whole country calls bullshit.

We, as a community, faced lockdowns and restrictions to protect ourselves and others, to protect the vulnerable in our communities when asked so our govt had the time to put measures in place: vaccines (not ordered), hospital support systems (not given), testing centres (what?)

Both state and federal govts broke the social contract, threw that responsibility back on to us – it’s easier to blame us, you see, when things go wrong. We didn't wear masks, we didn't socially distance. Hell, we were just licking one another, surely. 🙄

When @Dom_Perrottet threw out all restrictions in NSW in the midst of the Omicron wave, he knew it would spread exponentially. #LetItRip has always been his plan. Its always been about the economy over people. But he fails to see that without a healthy society there IS NO economy

Our plans to travel to see family in the regions won't eventuate because 1) we're not arseholes, and 2) my father has, as the politicians like to throw around, comorbidities. We are staying home and isolating, not contributing to the economy... apart from RATs.

We will see our way through this DESPITE this govt, not because of it. We will shout loudly that @ScottMorrisonMP #dickhead chose profit over people. And we will vote these sociopaths out. At least I hope we do. For all our sakes. I hope we do.
