1. Parents should have a say in their kids’ education. But the “parent empowerment” movement is less about parental involvement and more about imposing cultural conservatism on every aspect of public education popular.info/p/the-war-on-l…
2. In Oklahoma, legislation has been introduced to allow any individual parent to remove any book from the school library that contains “content of a sexual nature”

Librarians who refuse to remove these books at a parent’s request will be fired

popular.info/p/the-war-on-l…
3. Under the Oklahoma legislation, parents can also sue schools that don’t remove books and collect at least 10K in damages for every day the books remain in circulation

4. This stuff is happening
around the country. In Texas, Gov. Abbott asked the Texas Education Agency to refer school librarians that carry “pornography” for prosecution

Abbott considers critically acclaimed memoirs by LGBTQ authors “pornography”

5. We’ll see more of this because right-wing politicians believe it’s good politics. Youngkin became Gov of Virginia with a closing ad featuring a mom who tried to ban Toni Morrison’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel, Beloved, from her son’s AP English class

6. This is a critical moment for academic freedom because once you start down this path there is no logical end point

I’ll be tracking book banning and related efforts this year in my newsletter, Popular Information

Headlines like this are true, as I've documented after every FEC filing.

But the overall impression of this piece and others — that corporate PAC giving has "returned to normal" — is inaccurate

Many companies kept their pledges and corporate PAC money to objectors is way down Image
Here is one way to look at it. Many companies released statements. But many of them were just pablum

We documented 57 companies that actually pledged to cut off donations to the 147 GOP objectors

Since 1/6, FOUR have donated directly to objectors

popular.info/p/the-january-…
Another 16 of those 57 donated to the @NRCC and @NRSC, which supports the entire GOP caucus. In so doing, they violated the spirit, if not the letter of the pledge.

But that still leave 37 corporations that have kept their word with no caveats

1. One year later, corporate lobbyists are warning their clients that they need to start donating to the Republicans who voted to overturn the election IMMEDIATELY

popular.info/p/corporate-lo…
2. The fact that many companies continue to withhold donations from GOP objectors is a big problem for corporate lobbyists, who are used to directing cash to politicians as a way of buying goodwill and access

But would it actually benefit the companies?

3. Beyond the obvious public relations problems (ask @Toyota how well it worked out) there is little evidence that corporations spending money on politics improves corporate performance

The opposite is true

1. @thehill continues to launder spin from corporate lobbyists as "reporting"

Corporate lobbyists are eager to resume donations to Republican objectors because that's how they buy access
@thehill 2. But the idea that corporations themselves are trying to "rebuild bridges with GOP objectors" is based entirely on spin from corporate lobbyists
@thehill 3. Previously, @thehill reported that the corporate funding freeze on GOP objectors had "largely ended" even though corporate PAC donations to GOP objectors are down by 2/3rds and 79 major corporations have maintained a total freeze

1. The threat to democracy TODAY is more severe than it was on 1/6/21

Last year, dozens of major companies pledged to stop supporting GOP objectors

How many will pledge to maintain this commitment in 2022?

We contacted 186 companies to find out

2. SEVEN major companies tell popular.info they will not support any of the 147 Republican objectors in 2022:

@Airbnb
@BASF
@EversourceCorp
@lyft
@Microsoft
@DowNewsroom
@AmericanExpress

3. So most companies, as of now, are keeping their options open. These companies stopped donating to GOP objectors in 2021 but have not yet committed to maintaining their pledge in 2022:

@Allstate
@amazon
@CBS
@Cisco
@CommerceBank
@GeneralMills
@Hallmark

1. Just 46% of workers @tacobell are vaccinated

The situation reflects a decision, made by many corporations, to put profits ahead of the health of their employees and customers

@tacobell 2. A new study by @Shift_HKS shows that companies that provide support for their employees to get vaccinated — like PTO or on-site vaccinations — have much higher vaccination rates among workers

Companies that fail to do so end up like @tacobell

popular.info/p/why-more-tha…
3. @Starbucks, for example, provides two hours of PTO to get vaccinated. Its employees have a 79% vaccination rate.

The Shift Project concluded that "employer supports can help move the needle on vaccination."

1. In Florida, Gov. @RonDeSantisFL is pushing legislation that would REQUIRE teachers to lie about U.S. history

Teachers that tell the truth about the nation's founding could be SUED by parents

This is not an exaggeration

Follow along if interested

popular.info/p/desantis-pro…
@RonDeSantisFL 2. DeSantis announced the Stop WOKE Act. The legislation codifies a state regulation issued last June banning Critical Race Theory.

But that regulation goes FAR beyond banning CRT and proscribes how teachers can talk about the nation's founding

popular.info/p/desantis-pro…
3. The regulation prohibits teachers from defining "American history as something other than the creation of a new nation based largely on universal principles stated in the Declaration of Independence."

THIS IS A FALSE DESCRIPTION OF AMERICAN HISTORY
