Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot claims that schools are actually the safest place for students to be right now and that "we generally see little transmission in schools settings." This pie chart from the @IDPH website tracks COVID cases by site of probable exposure. Schools: 44%. Image
These are statewide figures. Available here: dph.illinois.gov/covid19/data/c…
And we know that in Chicago, school-based transmission is definitely under-documented for the reasons described by a local teacher in this thread.
Officials have basically decided that they can't stop the spread of Omicron, so they're crafting nonsense messaging to keep the economy moving as much as possible. That's why they've stopped talking about long COVID altogether and that silence should alarm people.

When I mentioned that I have a relative who is presently dying of COVID, I limited the replies to people who follow me, because I didn't want to field questions about whether or not they were vaccinated. I hate that people do that when folks are losing people.
I appreciate the kind responses from folks. The truth is, I don't know if they were vaccinated. I have been very vocal about vaccination and I know that the majority of my family has followed thru (it's a large extended family, I'm not sure about everyone).
I didn't know they were sick until it was so bad that I felt like inquiring about their vaccination status would just be shitty. So I gently inquired about whether some other family members were jabbed, to make sure they were as safe as possible. They were.

Chicago teachers want safe conditions. If you want them in the classroom, maybe demand those conditions? Just a fucking thought.
The fact is, a lot of people want the teachers to return knowing there's not even soap in the washrooms, let alone tests, and I wish people would name those conditions and say they want children and teachers to return to that. Bc that would clarify some things about the speaker.
Just say you don't care how many teachers and students get long COVID, or that we could reduce those numbers with some expense and inconvenience. Just be who you are out loud.

Enbridge already paid millions to fund the arrests, brutality and surveillance inflicted on Water Protectors resisting Line 3, as I described in the section of this piece called "Buying the Police." truthout.org/articles/line-…
In November, I talked to some Water Protectors who were still facing charges and looked into some of the gross prosecutorial overreach they were up against. truthout.org/audio/enough-c…

Chicago is holding in-person classes tomorrow because our mayor is awful. I would not send my child to school right now, fam. It's all going to fall apart quickly enough. No reason to be part of the crash.
The city of Chicago is strongly advising that students test before returning to school, but they know PCR tests are impossible to come by, and that even if folks can find rapids, those often miss Omicron in its early stages. This is so reckless & dishonest, it's fucking depraved.
Remember those at-home tests that *some* Chicago students were sent to help clear them for a return to school? A bunch of those families are getting messages that their samples were delayed and therefore not tested within the necessary 48 hour time frame, so no results.

Staying in tonight? Can you spare the cost of a cocktail? Last yr, some of you joined me in supporting @uplcchicago's efforts to help imprisoned people in IL get vaccine access. That effort succeeded. Now, they're fighting for boosters. Let's win this too. uplc.networkforgood.com/projects/15028…
The second most contagious virus on the planet is racing through the prison system. Many of us have gotten booster shots to help protect us from serious illness, but imprisoned people do not have access to boosters. We can help change that. uplc.networkforgood.com/projects/15028…
If you contributed last year, you helped UPLC fight to ensure imprisoned people received vaccine access early on. Thank you for that. It was a life-saving intervention that sadly did not occur in many states. Now, we have to help prisoners survive Omicron. uplc.networkforgood.com/projects/15028…

They want you to think free, widespread testing, free N95s and paying people to stay home are unrealistic. The 2022 Pentagon budget is $770 billion. That's about $25 billion more than Biden requested. There's plenty of money to save lives. We just spend it all on killing people.
The state re-legitimizes itself through violence. That's why they want you focused on crime rather than the hell this system is putting us through, and all that could be done differently.
