God's appointed Khalifah & the elections

The Holy Qur'an mentions different types of Khulafah. These include the Khulafah of God, the Khulafah of Prophets and the Khulafah of Nations. It is important to distinguish these categories to avoid misunderstandings.

Khulafa of God are chosen by revelations from God Himself and are His representatives on earth. They have the duty of delivering God's message. Thus, Hadhrat Musa as, Hadhrat Dawud as, as well as Hadhrat Muhammad pbuh count as Khulafah of God. ImageImage

Then there are the Khulafah of Prophets who are also appointed by God as they represent the Prophets and their message. The Khulafah of Prophets can be Prophets themselves or non-prophets. Image

We can see this in the example of Harun as, who was appointed as a Khalifah by Musa as. This Khilafat was only during his absence. This shows the importance of an Imam for the community who guides & oversees the believers. Image

The Khulafah of Prophets also include the four rightly guided Khulafah of Prophet pbuh as well as the Promised Messiah as and his Khulafah. Their duty is to protect and preserve the teachings of Islam so that they are not distorted. Image

As for Khulafah of nations, they do not pursue a spiritual goal, nor are they ordained by God for the people. This decision is up to the people themselves and is limited to worldly interests & desires. ImageImage

Allah appoints Khulafah from among the believers to consolidate the faith & replace the state of fear & insecurity with the state of peace & security. The aim of a divine khalifah is to strengthen the relationship between the believers & God and to not let them go astray.

God's Khulafah are appointed by God Himself. In the elections of the Khulafah of the Prophets, God assists & guides the believers in choosing the Khalifah. It's important to understand that the approach of the election of the Khalifah is not specified in the Holy Qur'an. Image

The elections of the Khulafah can be observed during the time of the Khulafa-e-Rashideen. After the death of Prophet pbuh, the leaders among the Muslims gathered in "Thaqifah Banu Saadah" & agreed after a brief discussion on Abu Bakr ra as the Prophet's sucessor.

All those present took the oath of allegiance on his hand & all those who weren't present did so as soon as possible. The 2nd possibility we see is when Abu Bakr ra consulted with a few companions shortly before his death & subsequently appointed Umar ra as his successor.

The 3rd possibility came into practice after the assassination of Hadhrat Umar ra, where he ra formed a committee of six people who would elect the next Khalifah after his death. Thus Uthman ra was elected as the third Khalifah. All elections are considered legitimate

& have the consultation before the determining the Khalifah. The same pattern can be observed in Tehrik-e-Ahmadiyyat, where Maulvi Noorudin ra was unanimously elected by members of the community present in Qadian after the death of the Promised Messiah as.

Even though the elections of the Khalifah are held by humans, every believer must be aware that these humans are guided by God. If you think that the Khalifah is chosen by humans & isn't divinely guided, you haven't understood the essence of God's teachings.

3rd Khalifah states that during the life of a Khalifah, conspiring, plotting or propagandising for a new Khalifah or nominating a candidate in this connection, whether he is popular or unpopular- all such practices are contrary to the teachings of Islam.

It is important to understand that in exceptional situations, a Khalifah can also directly appoint a successor, but this is only permissible once.

This has been explained by the 4th Khalifah that it is the opinion of the Jamaat that if a Khalifah, who is himself elected, sees a situation where fitnah (discord) is to be feared, he has the right to appoint a successor.

But such a Khalifah who has been appointed Khalifah by another Khalifah does not have the right to nominate his successor. Furthermore, according to Musleh Maud ra, not even under this circumstance may the Khalifah appoint his own son as the Khalifah. (Q&A 8th August 1986) Image

The Khilafat is a promise to the believers, which is why God guides them in the elections. However, prophethood is not conditional, so God determines it directly to guide the unbelieving and ignorant, whereas the believers must prove themselves worthy of Khilafat.

Thus, during elections for a spiritual leader, people receive divine revelations, dreams, visions & a sense of security is placed in their hearts. They can give their testimony even if they aren’t a part of the "Khilafat Committee".

Furthermore, everyone should be aware that even though the Khulafah may be related to each other, the Khilafat of the Prophet pbuh and Promised Messiah as is not hereditary. Rather, it is based upon the spiritual relationship with God & the Prophet pbuh.
