A portion of @JoeBiden’s prepared remarks commemorating January 6:
Biden: Trump "has created and spread a web of lies about the 2020 election. He's done so because he values power over principle, because he sees his own interest as more important than his country's interest... and because his bruised ego matters more to him than our democracy."
Biden on Trump and 1/6: "He can't accept that he lost."
Biden says "some courageous" Republicans are trying to preserve the party's heritage but "too many others are transforming that party into something else — they seem no longer to want to be the party, the party of Lincoln."
Biden: "The big lie being told by the former president and many Republicans who fear his wrath is that the insurrection in this country actually took place on Election Day, Nov 3, 2020. Think about that. Is that what you thought? Is that what you thought when you voted that day?"
Biden isn't mentioning Trump by name but this Jan. 6 anniversary speech is a comprehensive indictment of him, the "big lie" and its impacts, as well as Republican officials who are standing with him.
Biden points to the irony of Republicans who bolster Trump's lie that the presidential election was stolen but don't doubt the legitimacy of their party's victories on the same ballots.
Biden on 1/6: "I did not seek this fight... but I'll not shrink from it either. I will stand in this breach. I will defend this nation and I'll allow no one to place a dagger at the threat of democracy. We will make sure the will of the people is heard, that the ballot prevails."

“We found out, surprisingly, how poorly written it is, how ambiguous many of its provisions are, how simply things could be triggered without merit.” @RepAdamSchiff calls the ECA “a point of great vulnerability in terms of our democracy” in need of change. nbcnews.com/politics/congr…
Members of Congress are zeroing in on the 1887 Electoral Count Act, viewing it as poorly written, overly ambiguous and ripe for bad actors to exploit to steal an election — after Trump allies seized on it to try and keep him in office despite his defeat. nbcnews.com/politics/congr…
.@Sen_JoeManchin says he's having "good conversations" and notes "the need for us to protect democracy as we know it."
"I'm talking, I'm not agreeing to any of this." He says talking filibusters, eliminating first motion to proceed, restoring cmte privileges are being discussed.
Asked if he needs any change to Senate/filibuster rules to come with Republican support, Manchin says: "That's my absolute preference."
Joe Manchin on Build Back Better next steps: "There's been no conversations after I made my statement."
Jen Psaki is at the podium. She opens by praising Senate confirmation of Biden judges and executive nominees. Then notes new DOJ grants to combat gun violence + crime. Now questions.
Asked about Manchin/BBB, Psaki says her “lengthy statement” yesterday “outlined specifically” where things are. “I’m not going to re-litigate the tick tock.” She says Biden and Manchin are “longtime friends” who’ve worked together, then discusses consequences of BBB inaction.
“We’re going to continue to take steps, work like hell to get it done,” @PressSec says of Build Back Better, re-emphasized Biden/Manchin friendship and working relationship.
🚨 On Fox News Sunday, Joe Manchin says he's a NO on Build Back Better Act. "I cannot vote to continue with this piece of legislation. I just can't. I've tried everything possible. I can't get there."
BAIER: You're done? This is a no?
MANCHIN: "This is a no on this legislation"
Manchin calls BBB "a mammoth piece of legislation" and "I've had my reservations from the beginning." His concerns? Inflation, rising costs, national debt, "geopolitical unrest," Covid, new variant. He says he has been "very concerned about this" bill and Dem senators know it.
Here’s video of Manchin closing the door on the Build Back Better Act:
Chuck Schumer says the Senate "will act tomorrow to prevent default" by passing the filibuster-proof bill to lift the debt ceiling, enabled by the bipartisan legislation approved last week.
.@SenSchumer says the Senate still intends to “vote on President Biden’s Build Back Better Act before the Christmas holiday.”
That leaves this week and next.
Schumer on BBB: Committees have been submitting final text to parliamentarian, CBO and Republicans. Bipartisan “Byrd bath” meetings are happening this week. He says he and Biden will be talking to Democratic lawmakers to “hammer out the final details of Build Back Better.”
"We have basically 49 of us in agreement to move forward. So we have one colleague we're continuing to work with, and he's been successful at making a number of changes. And so hopefully he'll be joining us," Sen. Stabenow, in Dem leadership, tells me. nbcnews.com/politics/congr…
The nicotine tax may be stripped out of Build Back Better. Democratic Sen. @CortezMasto says she opposes it and has made her position clear to party leaders and the administration. "My concern is this is a regressive tax," she tells NBC. nbcnews.com/politics/congr…
