The insurrectionists attacked America on 1/6 by storming the Capitol. The most critical front in defending America in 2022 may just be Wisconsin.
Quick thread.
Republican radical Rebecca Kleefisch, running for WI governor this year, refuses to comment on whether she'd sign laws allowing the legislature to overturn presidential election results.
She aims to achieve the insurrectionists' goals, by other means.
Senator Ron Johnson, up this November, helped fuel the 1/6 attacks on America by pushing Big Lie rhetoric—and then immediately downplayed the attack and began pushing conspiracy theories about it.
Johnson has relentlessly pushed don't-believe-your-eyes lies since 1/6. If it happens again, we can't trust him to defend our country. He must be defeated in 2022.
Derrick Van Orden, GOP candidate for Congress in WI's 3rd CD, watched from Capitol Grounds as the insurrectionists ransacked the sanctum of our democracy. He's running again. Let's not let more Stop the Stealers join the Jim Jordans and Paul Gosars.
We need to defeat these radical Republicans—and reelect Gov. Evers @Tony4WI, AG Josh Kaul @JoshKaulWI, and Dems up and down the ballot who believe in our nation's highest ideals.
As AG Kaul told CNN, "it's important that we not talk about any one issue at the exclusion of others" in order to win—and yet it's critical to be clear "about how vital it is that we protect our democracy and our freedoms." cnn.com/2022/01/02/pol…
If you're concerned about the state of democracy, use today to remember the violence and anguish of January 6, 2021. And then, on January 7, set your sights on the elections of 2022, from the most local to the statewide. Democracy—America—needs you. It's all hands on deck.
As @reidepstein noted in this NYTimes conversation, Republicans in Wisconsin's state legislature are pushing hard to give themselves the power to nullify the public's choices. As long as he's in office, Governor Evers will block these bills. Re-elect him. nytimes.com/2022/01/06/us/…

IT’S THE FINAL DAY OF 2021. We’re closing in on our goal of 200 new recurring monthly donors by midnight TONIGHT. Why do we need support? Because we’re fighting for democracy on five fronts. Click to chip in, and read on for the final two in our countdown: secure.actblue.com/donate/eo21?re…
We’ve talked about Robin Vos and the shamtacular Michael Gableman investigation. We’ve talked about Mike Gallagher, Derrick Van Orden, and GOP members of Congress. We’ve talked about (yikes) Ron Johnson. Now it’s time for #2: Wisconsin’s Supreme Court and Partisan Gerrymandering.
Wisconsin’s Supreme Court is officially nonpartisan. The reality, though, is that it’s a 4-3 conservative-majority body that is, at this very moment, working to lock in Republican control of Wisconsin’s state legislature for the next decade.
Ron Johnson is, as America now knows and loathes, a general-purpose disinformation machine—pushing everything from lethal anti-vax misconceptions and wildly untrue Jan 6 conspiracy theories. nytimes.com/2021/03/21/us/…
The thing that makes him a clear and present threat to democracy, though, isn’t just the lies he pushes—it’s the actions he urges people to take on the basis of those lies. Such as his vocal opposition to certifying Biden’s Electoral College votes. jsonline.com/story/news/pol…
Republicans are gunning to take over the House next year. They don’t have to win many seats to do it. The ghastly thing is that we can see, based on what they’ve done this last year, how they’d use that power if they got it.
Trump is on a glide path to winning the Republican nomination in 2024. You might think that Congressional Republicans who vocally denounced the violence on January 6, like Mike Gallagher, would stand ready to prevent Trump from doing even worse damage. Nope!
COUNTDOWN: In 2022, the fate of American democracy hinges on one critical state—Wisconsin. It’s under attack. You can save it. This thread maps the top 5 threats. Help us hit our goal of 200 new monthly donors before the new year—share & chip in! secure.actblue.com/donate/eo21?re…
Before the countdown begins, as the drum roll ramps up in the background—WHY does it all hang on Wisconsin? How is it even possible that a state of 5.8 million shapes the destiny of a country of 332 million? It’s a ridiculous situation, but it’s real.
The presidency of the United States is won not by majority, but by Electoral College. Add up the states Trump won in 2020. He was three states short of victory. The 3 closest: AZ, GA, and WI.
THREAD: Democracy is under assault in Wisconsin—but we’ve been fighting back. Read on for how we’ve sprinted through 2021—and then click to donate so we can hit our year-end goal & ramp up the fight in 2022! wisdems.org/recap
Before we dig into our review of 2021, let’s set the stage—for why anyone outside Wisconsin should care about this state in the first place. Simply put: what happens in politics here shapes the course of the nation.
Wisconsin is the most evenly divided state in the country. 4 of the last 6 presidential elections have come down to less than 1%. In 2020, President Biden won WI by 20,682 votes—a 0.6% margin. In 2018, Gov Evers won by 1.1% As a result, every election here is a titanic battle.
Bernese Mountain Dog alert: several adorable Berners will be gathering for a quick walk at 3pm CT outside the Trader Joe’s on Monroe Street in Madison. Pumpkin’s excited to see her friends. All are welcome.
