Here are things I have negotiated & got increased:
1. Salary
2. Sign on bonus (if they can’t increase salary any further, ask for a sign on bonus, it’s usually easier to get & is a one off payment with your pay check
3. Relocation budget - if you are relocating, the company should be providing you with funds to do an initial discovery visit (flights & hotel) to see potential areas, then flights, moving costs for when you move, as well as 2-3 months of living expenses to get settled
Living expenses can include food (Uber eats, door dash etc) groceries, hotel, Airbnb or home rental, car hire.
Do your numbers & if you need more here, ask for it & expense everything, because unused budget will get returned to the hiring company if they use a relocation company
Be aware, you will pay taxes on the relocation budget, so the hiring company should actually pay more than the budget to also cover the taxes
Salary time!
Use sources to work out what you should be getting offered
Companies who use H1B visas legally have to publish the job titles & salaries of those on the visa
There is a federal law that H1B workers have to paid the same as US workers
Now use salary.com and or ZipRecruiter, GlassDoor, Indeed etc to search for job titles & locations to see the average local & national salary, so when you make your salary request, you want to be paid at the “prevailing rate” for the tile & location
As a minimum, your salary offer or request must be at or above the local or National average, whichever is higher.
By the way, companies already have this data & know what the “prevailing wage” is for the title & location and if they can get cheaper staff, they will try
