This month, I complete 6 months of quitting my 9-5.
A 'safe job' that didn't even cut our pay at a time most people lost jobs last year.
Here's what I've learnt.
/THREAD/
TL;DR
1. There's no upper limit to money 2. It's not as scary as you think 3. The world is a platter of opportunities 4. Your feed matters 5. You HAVE to be consistent 6. Money
1. There's no upper limit to money
Corporates make you chase the next promotion, raise, etc.
In March, I got a 5% raise at work.
In Dec'21, I calculated my finances and realised I got a 145.4% raise thanks to side hustling.
(will write in detail about that another time)
🙌 Pro tip: Don’t Quit Your 9–5 Before Securing these 4 Things
- One and a half sources of income (one as a side hustle, another one in pipeline)
- Practical Pessimism + Optimism = Resilience
- Somebody to guide you
- At least 6 months of money
2. It's not as scary as you think
- What if I get broke?
- What if my client leaves me? (They mostly will btw)
- What if I fail?
The first one is completely preventable. The other two will scare you more than they should 🤦🏻♀️
🙌 Pro tip: Develop a thick skin with failing, which will come by failing.
- I had a $1700/month client before I quit, he broke the deal a few months after my resignation
- I've got rejected multiple times a week
Take it as fuel and move on🤕
3. The world is a platter of opportunities
Here's what I thought I'd do:
- Freelance
- Write
Here's what I'm doing:
- Writing
- Creating products
- Solving issues
- Building a community
- Teaching
🙌 Pro tip: Let life take its own trajectory.
More fun, less worrying.
Many don't start because they're worried about their niche. But if they just start, their niche will come to them!
4. Your feed matters
What you see = what you think.
What you think = your inner chatter.
Your inner chatter = your self-image.
Curate your social media feed with like-minded people, and you'll notice the difference.
Made me realise how much office sucked with toxic people 😶
🙌 Pro tip: The mute button is a blessing.
5. You HAVE to do this for success
(even though I'm far away from being 'successful')
Many people quit, only to join back. They run out of money, or/and motivation.
Here's why:
- They don't put in the work
- They blame algorithms
- They try to get hacks and short cuts
🙌 Pro tip: In the creator economy, everything is directly proportionate to consistency.
Want to earn $$$$ digits on Medium? Write 20 articles
Want to start a course? First, build credibility and give for free.
Want to build an audience? Be more present, publish more.
6. Money
In Sept, I earned $50 more than my corporate salary.
I didn't work for 17 days due to surgery, yet I earned *more* than my salary, lol.
- Money flows with value
- Consistency pays off
- Consistency compounds
🙌 Pro tip: Take on high-value projects.
-Do a $50 article before charging $350. But don't do $5 ones.
-Build an asset that compounds. For me, that's Medium and now Gumroad.
-Build your personal brand, it attracts opportunities.
