1/ What happens when hospitals are overwhelmed & understaffed?

People die.

gothamist.com/news/nycs-hosp…
2/
3/ "Premium prices" to the point that traveling nurses are paid several times as much per hour as doctors.

I'm not saying that in a hierarchical, elitist way.

But rather to communicate how much scarcity is dictating prices at this moment.
4/ Full-time staff – nurses & doctors – are realizing that they can make more $ working fewer hours as traveling workers.

We're looking at a SERIOUS loss in capacity if people realize they can work a fraction as much, make $ & have more time off.
5/ And we're not just seeing this in NYC!

Check out Kansas:

cnn.com/videos/health/…
6/ In Kansas, Colorado, & states in the middle of the country,
hospitals are implementing crisis standards of care.

People are DYING because normal standards of healthcare aren't available.
7/ Doctors & nurses have to let some people die so that others might live.

Imagine YOU having to make that decision.

How well would you sleep at night? and the night(s) after that?

And work the next day(s)? month(s)? year(s)?

Because that's where we're at.

1/ @CBSMornings' @nateburleson: "I know people that are vaccinated...boosted that are still getting COVID, so why should I go out there and get vaccinated & boosted."

Vaccinations prevent hospitalizations & deaths, NOT all breakthrough infections.

Saving lives? That's win!

1/ I joined @uche_blackstock & @MSNBC's @AliciaMenendez to discuss the 3 @JAMA_current Viewpoints in which colleagues @ZekeEmanuel @mtosterholm @llborio @RickABright @drdavidmichaels & I outline an updated national strategy for controlling COVID:
2/ What would this change in strategy look like?

We've got to keep vaccinating. 💉💉💉

BUT

We've ALSO got to:
- Up our mask😷game to KN95 or N95 masks (order here: projectn95.org)
- Optimizing indoor ventilation🪟& air filtration
- Testing to isolate & treat💊
3/ How much will the emergence of new variants complicate our ability to control COVID?

Omicron is a triple threat:
- More immune evading
- More infectious than any SARS-CoV-2 variant to date
- Shorter incubation period than any prior variant

1/ America’s Omicron Wave Already Looks More Severe Than Europe’s
nymag.com/intelligencer/… by @dwallacewells

Omicron may not be as benign in the U.S.
2/ The American context may be different:
3/ coronavirus.health.ny.gov/daily-hospital…

As of January 7th in New York State:
- almost 12K hospitalized with COVID
- almost 1.5K in ICU with COVID

1/ @ZekeEmanuel @mtosterholm @llborio @RickABright @drdavidmichaels & I @celinegounder published 3 Viewpoints in @JAMA_current on an updated national strategy for controlling COVID.

1st: A National Strategy for the “New Normal” of Life With COVID
jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/…
2/ We've got to set realistic goals: to flatten the curve, & to suppress COVID hospitalizations & deaths.

Our health system is buckling under the weight of COVID. This is not sustainable.

The good news is that measures to control SARS-CoV-2 will also control influenza & RSV.
3/ Masking😷, ventilation🪟& air filtration will control COVID, influenza, RSV, & other viral respiratory illnesses.

Vaccines💉, rapid antigen tests & antiviral drugs💊can also help reduce influenza transmission, cases, hospitalizations & deaths.
