This article on the topic of pseudoarchaeology explains why I do my own homegrown science communication for the public

Good archaeologists are quoted here, but too much airtime is given to pseudoarchaeologists

A thread about who built the pyramids
/1

inputmag.com/culture/altern…
There is no scholarly debate over who built the pyramids, nor is there a reason for scholars to debate YouTubers over who built them

The pyramids are splendid monuments. I know because I've seen them and climbed in them

But, there's no real mystery in their technology
/2
The innovation we think of as pyramids was a slow progression over generations

Nearly 5000 years ago in early Egypt, the 1st and 2nd dynasty erected funeral monuments at Abydos that were massive square enclosures made of mudbricks.

Over centuries, these get bigger & bigger
/3
As a student, I excavated in & helped map the largest: the Shuneh at Abydos

It's no Great Pyramid, but it's impressive for its size (137x77m with 5m thick walls that stand 12m high) and the engineering and labor taken to create this monument

It's the predecessor to pyramids
/4
The Shuneh was built for last ruler of 2nd dynasty: Khasekhemwy

The monument for first pharoah of 3rd dynasty, Djoser, is our very first pyramid at Saqqara designed by Imhotep

It's made of stone. And it's stepped: build square structure, build smaller one on top. Repeat
/5
The engineers for Pharoah Sneferu, first ruler of 4th dynasty, built the first smooth pyramid

But, it took three tries!

The 1st at Meidum collapsed. We have its core

The 2nd at Dahshur is so wonky it's nicknamed "The Bent Pyramid"

The 3rd "The Red Pyramid" was a success
/6
The Great Pyramid builds off the innovations in masonry, engineering, quarrying & transportation developed over generations

The evidence is really clear. You can read about it. The pictures are clear

There's no room for debate
/7
But it doesn't even end here

Archaeologists have excavated the village and the tombs of the engineers and laborers who built the pyramids

They tell us how they built them. We know how they lived and what they ate
/8
So, when some pseudoarchaeologists or alternative historian, or even a well meaning journalist says they've spent "a lot of time thinking" or that they "think for themselves" about these topics

The reality is that they're imagining stuff rather than researching and "thinking"
/9
They trust that their audience hasn't done the research either

They harness deep seated prejudices, biases, and racisms when claiming indigenous peoples couldn't have built something monumental

But in the end, they're just trying to make a quick buck
/10
We know how granite was quarried in straight lines. We know how stone was hauled. We know how technology progressed

We know so much about our human past. And our ancestors all over the world were much more intelligent than these grifters
/11
We also know the grift works. More people are believing in pseudoarchaeology

We need to keep fighting. Fill the internet with real archaeology

I heard recently that my tweets pop up in Google searches. I hope a few people find this pyramid thread instead of a crap YouTube video
And if pyramids are all you know about the archaeology of Africa, then maybe give this thread below a read

Respectfully, Jimmy, I refuse to reply to you directly and draw more attention to your online presence

Clearly this "surreal" experience of being featured will grow your influence in the pseudo community

But below I provide several links to requested videos for anyone reading
And, a quick note: unlike pseudoarchaeologists, I don't consider Bronze Age technology to be "primitive"

As noted above, ancient people were pretty darn smart. It's why I enjoy studying them and sharing my knowledge of them with people
Video #1 is by @DrDavidMiano and presents the visible archaeological evidence we have in the form of saw marks, drill marks, and polishing for how ancient Egyptians cut stone

Video #2 is by Scientists against Myths and is a clear demonstration of how to saw granite using bronze age tech

Video #3 is by Discovery UK and shows quarrying and shaping of a large block from minute 7 on
This conversation of @SoilManDan with one of these pseudos is fascinating

It's amazing the breadth of falsehoods these people believe: Egyptians didn't have drills, hieroglyphs appeared out of nothing, their boats were too flimsy to carry stone

All wrong
And some thoughts from @Cult_Archaeo on the article that spurred this thread

She is one of a few scholars who is actively researching the spread of pseudoarchaeological misinformation and its relationship to other forms of conspiracy thinking

I wasn't going to add these insults to this thread, but I think it's important to document the nastiness, racism, and eugenics that exists in the pseudoarchaeology/alternative history community

Ancient aliens seems like fun & games, but scratch deeper...

A short reply: the proof that my debate tanked Graham Hancock's support in his fandom is everywhere

No rational people think his ideas are plausible after seeing us

So the only response he had was to make it seem I lied. A ridiculous and cheap ploy
/1

Image
The claim I lied is ridiculous for several reasons

First, not a single professional archaeologist agrees with him. We disagree for many reasons because the archaeological evidence against an advanced Ice Age civilization exists everywhere in all the archaeology we do have
/2 Image
Second, Hancock's claims that I lied have nothing to do with the two core disproofs that I focused my time presenting to Joe Rogan

The evidence for Ice Age hunter-gatherers on coasts, underwater, and in deserts

The evidence for the development of agriculture around the world

Let's look at the biggest mistake ever made by @Graham__Hancock that makes everything he's ever said look questionable

The Edfu Texts
1/8 drawing of the Ptolemaic period temple at Edfu
In Magicians of the Gods, on @JoeRogan, and other podcasts, Graham claims the Edfu texts are an Egyptian version of the Atlantis myth found in Plato

There are many problems with this conclusion that he doesn't share
/2
They were carved over a century after Plato died

Plato died in 348 BCE. They were carved on a temple built in Egypt when Egypt was ruled by the Greek speaking Macedonian, Ptolemy III

Plato's philosophies were well-known in Egypt in 237 BCE when they were carved

OK, I've now seen this video. I will reply in this thread to the defamatory accusation here, made both by @Graham__Hancock and @dedunkingpast, that I somehow "conned" Graham Hancock and @JoeRogan
/1
First off, Graham Hancock has written several books, hosted a Netflix series, and given 100s of talks on the topic of a global civilization from the Ice Age with advanced technology

If I conned him using published evidence, then he's admitting he doesn't know much about it
/2
Which is true. He admitted directly to Joe Rogan that there is "no evidence" for his proposed civilization

clip right here:

I'm not sure why there's a need to continue, but I will anyway

I am annoyed with the editors of Archaeological Prospection and the media and how it handles this Gunung Padang controversy

Nobody has gone and talked with local Indonesian archaeologists. None provide the correct date of the monument nor even stated it's not a pyramid
/1 photo of a terraced monument (Gunung Padang)
Misinformation and disinformation is successful because it fills up the internet with wrong information and overwhelms correct information

This retraction by the editors at Archaeological Prospection is not enough

Local archaeologists know about the site. They've excavated it screenshot of statement from Wiley Online Library about Gunung Padang paper: "The publisher and the Co-Editors-in-Chief have investigated these concerns and have concluded that the article contains a major error. This error, which was not identified during peer review, is that the radiocarbon dating was applied to soil samples that were not associated with any artifacts or features that could be reliably interpreted as anthropogenic or "man-made." Therefore, the interpretation that the site is an ancient pyramid built 9000 or more years ago is incorrect, and the article must ...
To learn more about the site, I reached out to Dr. Lutfi Yondri and @harrysofian

Why?

Because I couldn't trust what was on the internet. Wikipedia provides some wide range of dates. No article, blog, podcast, or youtube video provided an accurate date

I recently learned the teaching of ancient languages at Cardiff University (@cardiffuni @CUHistArchRel) is under threat: Latin, Ancient Greek, Hebrew & Sanskrit

SIGN AND SHARE this petition created by ancient history and archaeology students

From its foundation 130 years ago, the teaching of languages - including Welsh, Latin, and Ancient Greek - has been a central emphasis @cardiffuni

Multilingual inscriptions around campus can be found, but future students might not be trained to read those in ancient languages

The students note, 'We should be working to bring these languages outside of private education to make them accessible to everyone who wishes to learn & expand their knowledge of the ancient world'

Instead these subjects are becoming less accessible

In his new Netflix “documentary” #AncientApocalypse, @Graham__Hancock has declared war on archaeologists

His rhetoric sows distrust in experts, and #Atlantis conspiracy theories promote white supremacy

Buckle up, it’s time for an #ARCHAEOLOGY THREAD 🧵
/1 Screenshot from Ancient Apocalypse episode 1, “Once there
This thread will examine

1)Hancock's lack of evidence
2)How Hancock’s narrative recycles 19th century ideas on #Atlantis
3)The rhetorical tools Hancock and similar conspiracy theories use

Why trust me?

No idea. I’m just a dude who won’t pay for a checkmark

But I am a real archaeologist. I’ve excavated at sites spanning tens of thousands of years of human history & prehistory

Trust my credentials or don’t. But I’ll present real evidence why this show is crap
