THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT GETTING A JOB AS A BIOMEDICAL SCIENTIST IN THE UK FROM NIGERIA

The good news is that no exam is required for HCPC registration (the body that regulates Biomedical Science practice in the UK)

It is not as difficult as you may think rather it's straightforward to get licence to practice and a job as a Biomedical Scientist in the UK from Nigeria.

This pathway requires you to have:

1. Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS)
2. MLSCN registration (must be in good standing with the Council)
3. Cognate Medical Laboratory experience
4. International passport.

There are 8 main steps:

1. Read and understand the international application guidenote to enable you make a good application and get your school to certify your course information form.

2. Complete the HCPC registration form. Send the completed application form together with all the required documents listed on the guidelines (course information form, international passport, degree certificate etc) to the address on the form by post.

3. They would first of all check your application if it's okay to process and then contact you by email to pay scrutiny fee of 495GBP. HCPC will verify your application by assessing your education and professional experience against their standards. Takes 60 working days.

4. If your application is successful (which is likely, 99.9% have been), HCPC would contact you to pay registration fee of 180GBP, depending on the month, it might be higher or less.

5. Once you are registered, visit the NHS job site and start applying for Biomedical Scientist jobs. On your application, give reasons why you are suitable for the job on your support statement. When shortlisted, request virtual interview via Skype, zoom, Microsoft teams etc.

6. When you get a job, the trust will send you COS (certificate of sponsorship) which you would use for your visa application.

7. Apply for Tier 2 visa which takes 15 working days to process. You can read more about it on the UK immigration site

8. Visa application requirements includes COS, Degree certificate, International passport, Police Clearance (5k-10k), TB Certificate (55k), UK naric certificate (this is a substitute for IELTS)
