🏭 A new report from the @CommonsEAC has laid bare the shocking extent of pollution in England’s rivers and the harm it’s doing to humans, animals and the environment. So why are our rivers so polluted - and what can you do about it? bigissue.com/news/environme… @theriverstrust 📷Tim Green/Flickr
🚽 One primary pollution source is sewage, which was discharged into English rivers by water companies at least 400,000 times in 2020 alone. This waste contains all kinds of dangerous pollutants - from narcotics to e-coli and microplastics. 📷Pixabay
🐓Agriculture is one of the most significant sources of pollution, with fertiliser, waste from livestock and chemicals running into rivers and depleting oxygen levels in the water - killing fish and plants across the country. @RiverActionUK @NFFNUK bigissue.com/news/environme… 📷Pixabay
🏙️🗑️Pollution from urban sources is another key offender. Microplastics from tyres and roads, along with litter, are swept into rivers following rain, endangering the animals and plants relying on it for survival. bigissue.com/news/environme… 📷Pixabay
🌊Shockingly, the @CommonsEAC says there is no comprehensive picture of river pollution and the harm it’s doing due to “inadequate” monitoring. The evidence in their report, however, paints a frightening picture. bigissue.com/news/environme… 📷Pixabay
🦟One study by @CUWaterResearch of the River Irwell found more fragments of plastic per square metre in the water than there were insects. The full implications of microplastics on human and animal health are still unknown. bigissue.com/news/environme… 📷Pixabay
💊Report authors noted with “grave concern” that research from @sascampaigns & water samples suggest polluted rivers are becoming “breeding grounds” for drug-resistant bacteria and viruses, risking the emergence of hard-to-treat or untreatable illnesses: bigissue.com/news/environme… 📷Pixabay
🧪☠️Samples taken in 2020 showed that every single English river failed a pollution test, with just 14% considered of “good” ecological quality. This ranks England’s rivers as among the worst-quality in Europe. bigissue.com/news/environme… 📷Pixabay
❓“Faecal microbes, hydrocarbons, industrial chemicals, plastics, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products are found in sewage flows,” said Dr Rob Collins of @theriverstrust. “we know very little about their impact upon human health”, he warned. bigissue.com/news/environme… 📷Pixabay
☎️So what can you do to act on pollution? First of all, if you see it you can report it to @theriverstrust @sascampaigns or the Environment Agency. The latter two charities also offer hands-on ways to tackle pollution - from beach cleans to campaigning: bigissue.com/news/environme… 📷Pixabay
✍️💪You could also consider writing to your MP about the issue - and if there’s no campaign group near you, start your own. Groups like @cleanilkley and @WindrushWasp have already secured important wins on cleaning up rivers. bigissue.com/news/environme… 📷Pixabay

A new anti-protest law is one step closer to becoming a reality

The Public Order Bill creates longer prison sentences for certain protesters, in a bid to reduce "serious disruption"

Here are 5 things you didn't know about it👇

bigissue.com/news/activism/…
1. It could cost the public up to £17.9m over 10 years 💵

Most of this will be from the court cases stemming from increased arrests

“The growing trend of seriously disruptive and dangerous protest tactics are resulting in increasing costs to the public,” the Home Office said
2. The government wants to put the burden of proof on defendants 👮

A number of new offences, including 'locking on', require the accused to prove a 'reasonable excuse'

MPs warned this could "be inconsistent with the presumption of innocence" and the right to a free trial

Today is #WorldHomelessDay2022. It’s the perfect time to think about how to solve a problem that shouldn’t exist. We already know how to end homelessness. And it can be done. Here’s how:

bigissue.com/news/housing/w…
Housing First is a model that has already had a big impact on street homelessness in Finland 🇫🇮 It’s a simple solution: give people who are homeless a home and the support they need to keep it
Housing First is growing across the UK. But not quickly enough for some. @Crisis_uk chief executive Matt Downie said take up in England has been “far too slow” earlier this year

Anti-homeless architecture can take many forms and be tough to spot but it is a hidden fixture of cities and towns across the world 🌍 bigissue.com/news/housing/a…
Also known as defensive architecture, hostile design or exclusionary design, it is used to tackle social problems “in ways that appear to be benign but has potentially more aggressive impacts,” says expert @qurbanist
The most common type is the humble bench.

They can be designed with uneven surfaces and bars across them that look like arm rests but could really be there to stop people lying down. This has become almost the standard design

@MarcDavenant Marc took portraits of people like John, who had spent 25 years on the street.

John told him: "I’ve been attacked in hostels too many times, and threatened with knives. It’s safer on the street in Newcastle"
