Russia comes out of today's talks threatening to "eliminate unacceptable threats to our national security"; Polish FM warns danger of war highest for 30 years... do you feel, as a citizen, involved in this crisis? I don't... 🧵1/ reuters.com/world/europe/r…
2/ The threat of Russian aggression vs Ukraine is real. Even with talks in Geneva etc under way, RU continues to move significant conventional forces towards UA... eg: meduza.io/news/2022/01/1…
3/ It seems clear, from the readouts, that the USA has (rightly) refused to engage with Putin's laughable demand for NATO to rewind history back to 1994 and cancel Ukraine's effective sovereignty, but... socialeurope.eu/putin-pugilism…
4/ If NATO is - as it should be - a defensive-only alliance, then the "open door" policy is a fiction. No electorate in Western Europe would voluntarily include Ukraine under the Article V guarantee in the current situation... - ie pledge war in its defence...
5/ But the electorates of NATO countries are effectively shut out of this debate - as are Russia's. What we need is a cross-border confidence building body, focused on human rights under the ECHR, to start talking to each other...
6/ It's in the interest of military/industrial/oligarchic complexes on both sides to depict internationalism as "foreign influence" - just as Kaiser Wilhelm did in 1914... but we need the peoples of Europe to speak to each other beyond the megaphones of Biden, NATO, EU, CSTO etc.
7/ The USA - and the UK independently of Biden - could and should declare a No First Use of nuclear weapons policy - reversing the dangerous policy changes Johnson made last year...
8/ Without altering the constitution of NATO it's entirely logical for lawmakers across the NATO parliaments to state that they would require a vote on any Ukrainian application to join. As a supporter of NATO's defensive mission, I would vote against...
9/ The route to geopolitical stability, democracy and human rights - from the Baltic to the Black Sea - is the democratic overthrow of Putin and his oligarchs. That's what the Western govts will never say, but the left must say...
10/ In reality there is zero chance that EU govts whose militaries could actually deter Putin committing to a defence pact with UA. It's off the agenda - so we need to a) deter b) find compromises that stabilise the situation. More here medium.com/mosquito-ridge…

More detail emerging on Johnson's day of shame: 1/ He told Tory MPs he did nothing wrong 2/ He took legal advice on self incrimination - it was a lawyers' apology 3/ Sunak & Truss made calculated, late & minimally supportive statements ...
4/ Ross (Scottish Tory leader) called for BJ's resignation after he *failed to assure* there would be no more lockdown breaking revelations ... code for they both (snd therefore Truss snd Sunsk) know there will be ...
5/ The critical issue for Gray is not "who organised which party" but does she provide evidence that Johnson misled Parliament ... in which case he goes: that was the coded message of PMQs...

If Johnson thought the party was a "work event" - this begs other questions. 1/. What is a "work event"? There were work meetings allowed at the time, and that was an excuse being used as a loophole in corporates...
2/ If it was supposed to be a work •meeting• he would have spotted pretty quickly it was not. So how were he and Carrie Antoinette invited? By WhatsApp, word of mouth or email? There will be an evidential trail...
3/ Regardless of his intent, he was at the meeting and now recognises he should have shut it down. However, the major culpability is lying...

I only had 700 words to come up with reasons a new left party is a bad idea ... but here are the counter-arguments: 1/ the English/Welsh left lacks a public radical voice embodied in a legally constituted party ... newstatesman.com/politics/labou…
2/ A left party based on activism, that supported Labour/Green candidates in most places wouldn't split the vote ... but these already exist... (Williamson, SWP, TUSC). newstatesman.com/politics/labou…
3/ Longterm "labourism" is falling apart as a political culture/project - but given it's been the only route to power in U.K. I think it's better to fight that process, not accelerate it ... newstatesman.com/politics/labou…

The US media's reliving 6/1 as if nobody warned them, and they couldn't have worked it out for themselves. Almost the entire anti-fascist alt media warned them. Stop the Steal was totally obvious - 1/ this from me in late October 2020: newstatesman.com/world/2020/10/…
2/ Next - after 6/1 it was immediately obvious there would be a four year quasi-fascist insurgency, but no - the US media just breathed a sigh of relief as @ladygaga sang the anthem... this from 13/6/21 newstatesman.com/world/2021/01/…
3/ The next milestone was the acquittal of Trump - and the emergence of the insurrectionary wing of the GOP in Congress... which liberalism and the tank left totally underestimated medium.com/mosquito-ridge…

Yesterday, China jailed a HK lawyer for writing words about history. In the battle over historical truth, how disgraceful that part of the British left sides with the butchers of Tiananmen 1/ ... newstatesman.com/comment/2022/0…
2/ ... it would be so much easier not to raise this stuff - I'd get invites to more alt-left soirées - why rock the boat? Because we will never build a Labour left with the millstone of dictator-worship around our neck
3/ The CPC resolution on Party history should be causing outrage in the self-declared left media - yet silence: same with Russia/Ukraine... newstatesman.com/comment/2022/0…

2021 for me began with a lockdown edit of 3x films I made with @TheopiSkarlatos for @rosaluxglobal - "R is for Rosa" - about the ideas of Rosa Luxemburg. Start here...
I spent the rest of Q1 working with a few others on this DIY movie about the Paris Commune… (and learning motion graphics)….

... then I did the revised edit of How To Stop Fascism. Here's the moment I pressed send on the completed book... (the big green thing on my desk is Losurdo's massive takedown of Nietzsche)
