Imagine you're in a Twitter space. And there's this "Request" button.
You're thinking about pressing it: right away your hands are sweating and shaking, you're getting nervous
Sounds familiar?
🧵 How to start speaking in spaces
1/11 Let me tell you, as an introvert, I face this fear each and every time I jump into spaces.
Even in those that I know, even when I'm friends with hosts and co-hosts.
2/11 I'm used to this fear because I was a lecturer at universities, I had some public presence in my previous life: TV, radio, and more.
But I still feel it today. Always.
So how do I fight it?
3/11 Find your space
It's ok to feel uncomfortable in some spaces, as it is ok to feel comfortable in other spaces.
So make sure you find the ones you actually like.
F.ex, follow someone you know into a space.
4/11 Get ready
+ glass of water
+ notebook
+ pen
+ or a second device to make notes
Thank me later
5/11 Join the space
You don't have to jump on a stage right away.
You can stay as a listener for as long as you need to get ready. It can take a minute, an hour, a day, or more.
Don't rush. Take your time if you need it.
6/11 Write it down
If you can speak without notes – good. If you need to write down your ideas, that's also good.
Making notes is actually useful, bc believe me: you will find out a lot of interesting stuff along the way.
7/11 Press the f#ucking button
Just press it. Don't overthink it. Just do it without any thoughts, expectations, or whatever.
Just f#cking do it.
I personally press the button right when I join the space.
Because I know: the longer I wait, the less it is chances I'll do it.
8/11 Engage
Sometimes it feels like the most uncomfortable thing to do: start speaking. Especially if you're like me and you just CAN'T interrupt people.
This is when emoji reactions a useful: you can raise your hand. And wait for your turn to speak.
9/11 Surprise
The cool thing you will probably discover is that the people you meet there are awesome. They are warm, welcoming, and supportive.
Some of them will become your friends. And don't tell me I didn't warn you ;)
10/11 Retweet the Space
A good thing to do is to retweet the space you're in. That helps a lot both for you and everyone who joined.
How to do that: when you're in the space, press this round circle button in your left bottom corner.
11/11 TL;DR
+ Find the spaces you like;
+ Take your time to get ready
+ Get a glass of water and a notebook;
+ Join the space;
+ Listen and enjoy;
+ Write down your ideas;
+ Press the f#cking button;
+ Tadaaaaa;
+ Enjoy!
