okay, let’s see what Calvin has to say:

“The Lord Himself providentially opposes, conquers, and restrains the ferocity of our flesh by the medicine of the cross. He does this in ways that uniquely serve each believer's well-being. For we're not all equally or severely oppressed
by the same diseases. Nor do we all require the same exact cure. And so we see that each believer is subjected to a different kind of cross. Our heavenly doctor, having purposed to restore all of us to health, treats some more leniently. Meanwhile, He applies stronger remedies
to others. But none of us is left untouched by or remains immune to His medicine—He knows we are all diseased.”
-John Calvin, the lawyer
Surely Calvin is the exception to the Reformed rule, right? Lets see what my favorite Italian Reformer has to say:

“God measured out his medicine for us from the death and resurrection of Christ so that we might be liberated and death might die. Like a wise doctor, he prepares
a draught of medicine for the sick person, which may relieve him and get rid of the fever or sickness. We drink a healthy dose of this healthful medicine when mentioning the Lord's death and resurrection, in our reading or preaching when we embrace them with a lively faith and
when we proclaim our faith by the sealing of baptism and the reception of the eucharist. In these holy actions both the death and the resurrection of Christ are celebrated. In treating this passage Paul
adds that death is absorbed by victory, that is, the victory of Christ.”
-Peter Martyr Vermigli, the non-Physician

Jesus and John Wayne is off to a great start! ImageImage
I’m going to continuously come back here to tweet about my findings and fun comments going through this book. Hope y’all enjoy!
why is it an either or? One can’t read the gospels while ignoring Revelation. If evangelicals only read Revelation while ignoring the ministry of Jesus I’d get it, but istm that evangelicals have no problem focusing on the gospels. Heck, most find Revelation too confusing! Image

Vermigli on the inability of the natural man to please God:

“Let us also consider the natural purpose which philosophers have discerned, that people should live according to reason and excellent virtue; let us see how few have attained it, and so learn the weakness of human
virtue even in what is within the capacity of human reason. Consider still another necessity to which those in this state are subject, namely sin. For whatever they do without the grace of God and faith, they necessarily sin. They are children of wrath, and since they do not
believe in Christ, the wrath of God remains on them. Thus they cannot do anything good that may please God, because he has regard to men rather than to their gifts. They are evil trees; therefore, they can bear no fruit that is not evil. Paul called his Jewish good works not

John Owen on reliance on Christ to help mortify our sins:

“Let your soul admit this: ‘I am a pitiful, weak creature, unstable as water. I cannot excel. This corruption is too hard for me, and it is on the verge of ruining my soul. I do not know what to do. My soul has become
like parched ground, and a habitat for dragons. I have made promises and broken them; vows and engagements have meant nothing to me. I have had many temptations over which I got the victory. I should be delivered, but I am deceived. So I can plainly see that without some
superior help, I am lost. If I continue on this path, I will be triumphed over until I completely relinquish God. But although this is my condition, let the hands that hang down be lifted up, and the weak knees be strengthened. Behold the Lord Christ, who has all the fullness
