🧵A new front in the greenwashing battle has opened: blending #hydrogen into fossil gas infrastructure to achieve nominal emissions reductions
TLDR: it's not a climate solution
The reason why gas distribution companies like @Enbridge are touting blended #hydrogen is not because they want the world to go green, but because it will lock in continued use of their gas pipes
They don't care about the climate, they are actively fighting electrification
We have climate solutions for home cooking & heating: we can electrify our homes - and stop using fossil fuels entirely
Electric appliances are a better option than hydrogen in every way: they're available, cheaper, more energy efficient & provide cleaner air
One study found that if hydrogen were used in our homes, the annual predicted number of explosions would more than quadruple rechargenews.com/energy-transit…
Digging into the numbers a bit, the most optimistic projections from industry are that they can blend 20% hydrogen into existing gas infrastructure.
According to the IEA, that results in 6% emissions reduction.
Again, 20% is the most that can be blended
Blending a negligible volume of hydrogen - even renewable hydrogen - into carbon emitting fossil gas is a dangerous distraction from realistic measures to decarbonize space and water heating
