Our review on Spatial Goal Coding in the Hippocampal Formation is now out in @NeuroCellPress!:

🔽Some teasers from the review

1/
We attempted the ambitious task of summarizing, categorizing & making (some) sense out of the literature - from 1931 to 2021 - on *if* and *how* the hippocampal formation encode spatial goals.

2/
1. Navigation strategies

Different brain regions preferentially support different types of navigation - so goals are likely not represented similarly when using different navigation strategies!

Also, did you know about the "sequential egocentric strategy"?

3/
2. Theoretical predictions

Ranging from goal-cell models, which provide a gradient of activity leading to goals, to proposals that sequential, topological or vectorial goal-directed information may be extracted from place- and/or grid-cell ensembles - check out our table!

4/
(disclaimer: some models, ideas and findings will undoubtedly not have made the cut. Do not hesitate to add references or theories you might miss to this thread! #SciTwitter)

5/
3. Planning

A crucial phase in many, but not all, types of goal-directed navigation

Place cells can reactivate, sometimes anticipating the future trajectory or goal - but not always! Why? Could it be differences in navigation strategy, memory demand, task engagement? ...

6/
3. Still planning!

What about #GridCells, or the entorhinal cortex more generally? Yes, these may be involved in planning as well, according to some models, single-cell data or even fMRI experiments!

7/
4. En-route to the goal

Many things happening! Not only the 'classical' #PlaceCell activity, but also, possible deliberation in theta sequences, route or temporal context recall with #SplitterCells, multiplexed coding of distance and/or direction to goal (goal-vectors?)...

8/
"How does the brain make sense out of it all? you might ask.

We may not have the full answer to this quite yet... but feel free to suggest ideas!

9/
5. Reaching the goal

At this stage studies report increased number of active place or grid fields, increased activity of place or grid cells, maybe even reward cells*...

* depending on anatomical location, task, trajectory stereotypy, novelty, salience & memory demands 😅

10/
5. Reaching the goal (still)

also REPLAY - a lot of replay (well, at least when the goal is rewarded). Possibly a learning and/or evaluation mechanism?

11/
"I'm really confused now, don't you have a simple summary figure that I can just look at?"

You bet!:

12/
Still here? You get to know about future challenges:

- multi-area communication & synergy
- importance of current strategy
- mixed and multiplexed tunings, possibly at different times and timescales
- and let's not forget the 'positive results' bias
