...and his response was, "You can say all that and you don't see how the trans agenda threatens gay men? You literally just told me you killed a gay man in order to live and you're trying to tell me we're the same."
And this was, again, right after he had explained that he'd tried life as a trans woman before accepting he was a gay man. And I could 100% sympathize with how that must have felt. I know what it's like to try living as a gender you're not. I know how impossible and harmful it is
And I think that when there isn't robust sex education that includes the full spectrum of sexual orientation and a flexible and deep model of gender... lots of gay kids and trans kids (and gay trans kids like I was) are going to be lost and confused.
Because the thing is, you can know yourself as well as a person can but if you're trying to put the things you know about yourself into a larger societal context, you're going to be limited by the information that you have available.
I've said this on here before, but in my teens to early twenties I tried out each letter in LGBT individually (not in that order; not even really linearly) in the course of figuring out who I am, and a big part of that was a lack of information distinguishing gay and trans.
